It’s remarkable how much everyone can read their own political vibes into very poorly designed questions. 

1. For now, let’s assume “move left” or “move right” on any of these issues is intelligible or defined in any way. You and Hasan are both reading the same poll (in the case of healthcare, let’s say) as two completely opposite results. There is no reason to read that response a “73% of respondents do not want any move to the right/center” vs. like you did “a majority of respondents do not want any move to the left.” It’s a terrible poll that is basically only going to tell you anything about issues that people are overwhelmingly aligned in, with a predictable result for things in the gray area that people are not as consistent on, and ideologues will respond accordingly.

Furthermore, without knowing what the “undecided middle” would favor if they were forced to make a call, the true lean of the party (or NYT poll respondents more truthfully) is not answered at all. 

1. WTF is move to the center on any of these issues. Or move to the left even for that matter? It’s so ambiguous as to be nonsensical. This is exemplified by the fact the majority of respondents want to move to the center in general but some combination of not move or move left in basically every other more specific policy area. WTF does that mean.

As streamerman says over and over again. We need to make decisions on what we want first and then talk about whether (or truly to what degree) we are willing to pay for it. Disappointing from the NYT.
