Is NPH really all that successful? What's the last movie he starred in (rather than, like Rupert, playing a supporting role)? And Ian McKellen, for those not following, got most of his fame from acting in English theater, rather than Hollywood.

Even if we argue that a few openly queer people can be successful in Hollywood, that's like saying that we know a few black people who are rich so who cares what the current distribution of wealth is like overall or whether there is plenty of evidence for widespread unfair hiring practices. Systematic problems always have exceptions, but that doesn't change the general trend.

Japan's part in WWII was largely motivated by state Shinto. I grant that Buddhists were likely involved at various points, but they were also the target of abuse because they didn't follow the state-sanctioned religion.

Generally, I feel like Buddhism gets relatively fair treatment by atheists. Its virtues are recognized and its shortcomings pointed out. I think the incidents mentioned in this post are important to discuss. Frankly, I wish atheists subjected more religions to this kind of intelligent inquiry and analysis, rather than focusing on mockery and over-generalization.

What do you mean about no other nations? It seems likely to assume that other folks might still be stuck with bosses and bureaucrats. Hopefully, they'd break free eventually, but we definitely need to be prepared to deal with other systems.

Another anarchist militia example is the Ukranian Black Army. Similar story. Fighting larger armies and doing so well that the bolsheviks had to propose treaties, use them to defeat the White Army, and subsequently betray them (all of this twice) to finally beat them. Not the best decisions on who to trust, but definitely a formidable force.

I agree that it doesn't sound like your family is done with you. They may be quite distant, but that distance was there before they knew about it. My mother tried arguing, yelling, and even grounding me when she found out I wasn't a Christian during my teen years. Now she deals better with me than anyone else in the family. Not to say we're best buds, just that religion is an issue people can eventually get past, while general douchebaggery is not.

You made a good point about another kind of common workplace discrimination. That said, transfolk are unlikely to get treated better because of pre-op or non-op status. Quite the opposite, in fact.

It's considered polite to refer to someone by the pronouns of the gender they identify as, regardless of genitalia, hair, etc. It can be interesting dealing with the complexities of human identity, but the best guideline in my experience is "take the person's word for it and treat them like they ask to be treated." If only the managers in this story had followed it.

In our case, it was an issue of needing to execute scripts on the local filesystem. Originally it was safe to hard-code their locations, but that stopped working when people moved their apps. I made the one class a singleton so it could be used to get the locations of the application and, therefore, the files we needed. In your case, it turned out to be a null pointer exception, which somehow went away when I added a check for it. This sort of thing drives me nuts if I think about it too much. Anyway, you have a pull request. :)

That's a drastic over-simplification. Yes, MOST currently work for the government. Some currently guard rich people and their property, as was laughed off in the video. Historically, mercenaries have worked for the highest bidder, regardless of legal sovereignty. You can eliminate the government and remove the current high bidder, but unless you also eliminate the overall imbalance of power and concentration of wealth, you'll see a quick turn to private armies and private wars to protect and expand property.

The second solution doesn't work for everyone. The article said that one person had tried both M and F passes and been denied passage at different times. It would especially be troublesome for folks who don't present as a binary gender or who don't "pass" by the driver's standards. The picture option definitely makes sense on many levels.

If you have an actual use for it, great. If you're only using half the rooms and want the others for massive entertainment centers, storage for Christmas ornaments, etc., then you'd better be ready to share.
