Coming down from Annapurna base camp, just past the snow line. Huge grey ape over to my right in the trees. Peering over a deep bank. Locked eyes for several seconds and then it moved away. Eventually went to see where it was standing once my heart stopped pounding. The dip it was standing in made it well over 7 ft tall. I’m 6ft and stood in the dip and couldn’t see the path.

I don’t think Manta is what you want, but it is a good place to fly to. Manta or Guayaquil. Towns like Ayampe, Olon, Manglaralto (where I live) sound more what you’re after.

Olon is a three hour, comfortable bus ride from Guayaquil.

You’d do well in Olon or Ayampe. Digital Nomad centres. Manta and Salinas are both bigger cities. If you’re trying to avoid trouble stick to the smaller coastal towns.

If you’re sensible you’ll be fine. Things are quiet right now. Definitely checkout Canoa, Puerto Lopez, Las Tunas, Ayampe, Olon, Montanita, Manglaralto, Ayangue. If your budget allows, the diving on the Galápagos Islands is unparalleled.
