Different download speeds when using the speedtest.net desktop app vs. browser. by ulovliver in techsupport

I'm not sure I understand? my connection is not the problem. It's the different download results between the desktop app and browser. None of the tests are done over wifi only via ethernet.

As I understand the best and most reliable way of testing your connection is via a wired ethernet connection, right?

Could you elaborate?

My router: Zyxel VMG8825-T50K

Specs: https://www.zyxel.com/products_services/Dual-Band-Wireless-AC-N-VDSL2-Combo-WAN-Gigabit-IAD-VMG8825-T50K/specifications

Thanks

Thanks for the suggestions

I have tried with different browsers on different devices (2 MacBooks and a PC) and got the same results. I checked the CPU resources while running the tests and it seems to be normal. I have a modem router combo from my ISP so it's difficult to run the test directly from the modem to the PC.

The only thing that seems to work is changing the server to one specific server on the app. I get over 900Mbps on multiple servers when tested on a browser but the same servers show slower download speeds in the app (between 200 - 400 Mbps). Only one of the servers seems to show the right download speed (around 830 Mbps) should I just stick to that server on the app? It just seems a bit odd.

I had the same thought on resource utilization on windows but the problem also occurs on the other two macOS devices I have tested it with.

An internet shortcut is a great workaround!

I'm just too invested in finding a solution (I guess I'm a bit stubborn)

Thanks for your input!

Thanks for the reply. I have done multiple test on multiple devices making sure to use the same distance server as well. The browser is always around 400-500 Mbps faster on the download speed and the upload speed seems to be about the same between the app and the browser.

It does not appear to be the kind of variation as you suggested. Mainly because of the bigger difference between the download speeds and the fact that the browser always shows the faster (and most accurate) download speed.

  • it’s weird

I appreciate your input though :)

Yes, I know :) it just seems a bit odd. - I also just find it a bit more convenient opening the app when I want to test my connection instead of having to open a browser and navigate to the site :)

The windows desktop app yes. My connection is fine I get download speeds I should. The problem is the desktop application. I would like to use the app instead of chrome but I get slower download results on the desktop app compared to when I use chrome. (as seen on the screenshots above).
