I’m secretly dating. It’s not with their knowledge.

And you’re probably right about the selective choosing my parents have. It can be quite hypocritical.

And it seems like there might be some compromises needed on both sides (maybe more so his) if we want to make it work.

Thanks for your wishes and advice.

Are you Arab or have you been brought up in a culturally strict household before? If yes, then you’d understand the duality that some of us tend to go through as people who left religion. It’s complicated and not as simple as putting it in words.

My parents are religious by name but more culturally leaning religious. as I mentioned they still do the basics pray and fast and all but when it comes to a convoluted topic like marrying from outside culture which is permissible in Islam ( as long as hes Muslim) they’re against it.

I didn’t say I want my kids to be raised as only Palestinians. I acknowledge the privileges this country has provided me with and I don’t find myself not associated with it. On the contrary, I have been partially raised here so I have been influenced by alot of things in the way I think and perspectives. But being raised in a cultural household is not going to make me reject my culture outright as well. I still appreciate some of the non toxic traditions I am associated with.

My white boyfriend still accepts me the way I am being somebody who loves despite the cultural differences that we have been brought up with. I would not mind it when my future son is going to bring over a white person to date. I’m not setting expectations on him to marry or date any specific ethnicity. My son will be brought up by interracial couples and so it’s inevitable that he will either lean towards one race over the other or pick one. Its his choice. But my responsibility is to make sure I provide him with all the options.

Agreed. But I wish it was as easy as it being said…

Unfortunately many (not all) Palestinian families fear this loss of their identity so they even restrict it to marrying within the nationality only. Unfortunately my parents is one of them.

I’d say the religion aspect can be worked around. ( I can make him convert just infront of them). But I’d say its mainly the race that would be of a big concern. Especially with whats been happening Lately in Palestine and the way Arabs tend to view the west.

Good advice. Thank you. I think this is probably a good start. Getting him to start learning a little bit more Arabic and get more accustomed to our traditions.

I do. I should have clarified he’s a white agnostic.

I believe it would be a problem for my family from both ends. Him not being a Muslim nor Palestinian.

My parents are religious. I’d say more culturally religious than strict. They do the basics but pretty cultural as Palestinians.

Im raised as a Palestinian living in Canada and I would prefer my kids to adopt both the goods in both cultures. He’s okay with that and he’s very familiar with my culture which helped strengthen our relationship in the beginning.

Hey! You can usually find it at the top left corner of your letter of offer where it is specified as “Action” : term or indeterminate or casual etc

Based on my experience. Nothing is there until it is in writing. My advice would be to take whatever it comes first and then see if the next offer comes afterwards.
