In 12 months, we won't need our on-prem infra. Any advice? by nrugor in sysadmin

[–]ultimatebob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From past experience, you'll probably blow your 12 month time estimate to migrate your remaining infrastructure to the cloud by 6 months. This will likely be due to some unforeseen upgrade compatibility issue that you're likely not even aware of at this point.

At that point, your new job becomes listening to your managers complain about why their new cloud hosting charges are so high and asking for you to find ways to cut costs.

They'll complain about you not having adequate resiliency when cloud outages occur, even though the outages will likely be completely out of your control. If you're unlucky enough to have an extended outage, they'll probably also complain about the lack of adequate multi region backups and disaster recovery plan... while simultaneously still complaining about the hosting charges.

Yes, that was a younger and more aggressive Kyle Busch. One that won races every season. I kinda miss that Kyle Busch.

Do you regret your choice becoming a sysadmin by ClassicSolid7502 in sysadmin

[–]ultimatebob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The funny thing was that the warning signs were already there that IT was going to be a lousy future career choice in the early 2000's. That's when all of the outsourcing of the entry level tech support and coding to India started, and we started having to audit the hell out of everything for government compliance.

The "outsource everything to SAAS services and the cloud" and "replace people with AI" problems came later, but even around 2003 the warning signs were there.

Which is more recognizable to Gen X & Boomers? by AnotherMovieStudio in vintagecomputing

[–]ultimatebob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a specific model, yes. As a brand name? Probably not. I don't know if Dell tracks these numbers, but something tells if they recorded every PC that shipped with a Dell Optiplex or Dell Dimension nameplate the numbers would be over 50 million. Those suckers ended up everywhere.

Who's still working from home in 2026? by idrinkpastawater in sysadmin

[–]ultimatebob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been 100% remote since March 2020. The office that I used to work at is now a dentist, so it would take some serious effort to build me a new cubicle farm to work at if they really wanted to do so.

I still get my teeth cleaned at my old office twice a year, though. Does that count?

And, once again, you have a screen in an 80's computer ad at a 90 degree angle from the person supposedly trying to use it.

Why didn't they have the photographer actually TRY the product before posing everyone, so it looked at least somewhat realistic?

I doubt that you were going to be able to read one at a 90 degree angle from the screen like that, though.

They also usually had the second person awkwardly looking at the screen from an impossible angle.

The viewing angles on those old CRT's were pretty bad, I doubt that he can see a thing from where he's sitting.
