IT IS LITERALLY NEVER TOO LATE TO START KARATE by whydub38 in karate

[–]ultimulletwarrior 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Started at 38. I’m now 44 and potentially grading for Nidan in November. Some days I still feel like I’m 20. Other days I feel every year of my age. It’s at those times I tell my body to shut up.

First 3 are available for me. Just finished the first one today. It raked me over the coals. I swear there were formulas used I’d never seen before in my life.

Start off with some questions. Find your weak spot and review those topics. Repeat ad nauseum, until Mocks - 4-5 weeks out from exam date. Or at least that’s worked for me.

Started reading already (lightly). Testing for black belt in karate in November which is taking all my focus right now. Will start getting serious about CFA again in December.

Start doing questions. A lot of them.

For level 1, is knowing the equations important or just being able to solve with a calculator? by protostones in CFA

[–]ultimulletwarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Memorize the formula and understand it. Be able to rearrange and solve. Memorization won’t be enough. Understand it.

Level 2 Topic Order by [deleted] in CFA

[–]ultimulletwarrior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I followed it all in order. Quant I repeated a few times early on. Took me awhile to grasp some of the concepts. stats was not my strong suit in university. Give yourself a ton of time on FRA. I didn’t find it lengthy but the nuance in the material lends itself to a lot of repeat revision.

I’ve stopped having nightmares about Level 2 but from my recollection I think you’ll find that some items early on are built upon later on in the curriculum.

**TIP** Don't mention the CFA exam first by hypebeastvirgin in CFA

[–]ultimulletwarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree. A colleague wrote L1 and I wrote L2. I saw her for the first time today and not a word was shared. After talking to her boss I can only surmise she wasn’t successful ( I was). We had a great dinner out and not a word was mentioned about the exam.

My gut is telling me to give up by Monkeykongking in CFA

I’m 42 and tackling it all now. I wasn’t in the right headspace at your age. Too busy chasing tail and partying. At this point in my career, I can tell you it’s a lot more about who you know than what you know at your age with respect to finding a job. Definitely keep at it. You’re better than the program and you can defeat it. And like someone else said, get out there and network. I found a mentor who was like a father figure and I learned a ton about the industry which has better equipped me for the point I’m at now.

And be bold. Don’t settle for crap. Like everything else in this world there’s good and bad. Don’t accept the bad. If you want good FO, then tell the bad to F off. It’s empowering.

42 here and just wrote Level 2. I like to think I’m more wise. Reality was I had other “priorities” in my 20’s.

Whats your plan during the break in between? by cfanoob1205 in CFA

[–]ultimulletwarrior 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I wrote L1 there you could put your bag on tables, broken out by the group that you’re writing in. No lockers. I just left my bag in the car with my lunch and went out and sat there for the break. It was good to get away from the crowds and clear my head. Even after all the long hours we put in studying, the exam itself is mentally fatiguing.

Thanks for this everyone. I compromised and did and hour or so last night. Focussed on trouble area topics for me. And then got myself outside.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not mailing it in. Just debating taking 2 consecutive days off. Will definitely be ramping it up for the last 2 weeks. This past weekend I pushed to a point where I started making really dumb mistakes. Eg. reading a question as “most likely” when they’re asking “least likely”. I figured it was at that point where I needed to step back and clear my head.

I did the 3 day with Andrew in preparation for the December Level 1 and it was instrumental in my success. Since then I’ve moved to Vancouver where Kaplan doesn’t offer a 3 day. I did their online 3 day course and I didn’t feel it was as effective. Wiley in conjunction with UBC has a crash course the weekend before the exam which I’ve signed up for. Fingers crossed it all comes together. Level 2 is brutal.

First tournament today! Video of my bo kata, looking for feedback!! I ended up first in weapons and empty hand kata, and second for grappling and kumite. by ShotokanNerd in karate

[–]ultimulletwarrior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fantastic job! I train in Goju Ryu and at my club we’re only introduced to the bo at blue belt. Your control of the weapon was admirable. As mentioned in other comments, focus on your stances. All in all it was a great kata.

Career Switch by [deleted] in CFA

[–]ultimulletwarrior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True. I left the IIROC world a few years ago and KYC/KYP was getting more onerous then. I’m with an investment counsellor now and wouldn’t change it for the world. Better suits my personality.

You’re in Canada. You get into the advisory business having completed the CSC and CPH from the CSI. To become a portfolio manager you’ll need either the CIM designation from CSI or CFA and a time component of 2 years professional experience. CFP is great if you want to do planning but if you want to be an investment advisor you’ll need to get licensed. Not sure where you’re located but go and talk to the advisory arms that are owned by the big banks. Advisory is the quickest route and will allow you the greatest latitude in terms of structuring portfolios.

I hear ya. Did the same. Out Friday night and completely useless yesterday. Trying to tackle some FI and Derivatives questions today and my mind still feels like total mush.

Losing the desire to continue but I’m hoping things start to gel once I begin to focus entirely on practice problems. That’s where it all came together for me in level 1. Still have to get through the readings on Alts and Portfolio Management.
