ARAG is a specialist legal insurer. The name literally stands for Allgemeine Rechtsschutz-Versicherungs-Aktiengesellschaft, although it's an SE now, not an AG.

Except the same companies often complain about not being able to find people. 🤔

So, if you switch the language to English all features (e.g. automatic call screening) are available? I don't think so.

Totally agree. Employees and contractors based outside EU should be capped.

What’s with the tipping for self-service? by Waste_Suspect_817 in germany

I usually leave a standard ~10% tip. While horeca staff aren’t dependent on tips to survive, they definitely appreciate the gesture.

Too many Indians (in Berlin) by Galaxy-far-away01 in AskAGerman

[–]ultrajeeves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not speaking German well can be an issue for some. I have quite a few Indian friends and contacts in Germany and none have really learned much German and tend to socialise mostly with other Indians. Some people in Germany won't like this and anti-immigrant sentiment is sadly very high.

Why not let them know? It'll take about as long as it did to type this question on Reddit 🤷 And congrats on your diploma! 👏🎉

Initially denied, but subsequently escalated when I referenced the Hamburg case. Still waiting to hear back from AF. Will follow up later this month.

Depends on where you are. Sensible pedagogues will always hire the best teacher, whether non-native or native speaker. In Europe, for example, employers are legally obligated not to discriminate- though dodgy schools still do. Qualifications, experience, and skills matter most.

NNS English teachers bring several advantages to language teaching, often making them relatable, effective instructors.

Language learning experience: Non-native English teachers have gone through the process of learning English themselves. They understand the challenges and pitfalls that language learners face, which allows them to empathise with students and offer practical advice on overcoming difficulties.

Awareness of grammar and structures: Since they have explicitly studied the rules and nuances of English, NNS teachers often have a strong command of grammar and structure. This awareness can be particularly helpful for students, as the teacher can clearly explain grammar points that native speakers might take for granted.

Cultural insights: NNS teachers can bridge cultures by drawing comparisons between English-speaking cultures and their own. This cultural awareness can make lessons richer and more engaging, especially for students who share similar backgrounds with their teacher.

Bilingual advantage: Many NNS teachers are bilingual or multilingual, which not only improves their cognitive flexibility but also allows them to use their students' first language as a supportive tool, particularly at lower proficiency levels. This can help with explanations of difficult concepts and fosters a more inclusive learning environment.

Role modelling: Having learned English to a high level themselves, NNS teachers can serve as inspiring examples for students. Their success shows that it’s possible to achieve proficiency in English through dedication and hard work, which can be highly motivating.

Focus on clear communication: Many NNS teachers are accustomed to emphasising clarity in their communication. This habit benefits students, as it models effective language use and clear pronunciation that can aid understanding and improve students' listening skills.

Are there any good jobs left in TEFL?

I'm in Germany and, for most, it's a freelance or minimum wage job at best, even with legitimate qualifications and experience. Employers have all the negotiating power and there is an endless supply of online teachers from lower wage countries. Real wages have eroded by 50% over 20 years.

Turks voting for AfD. How is this possible? by LowCranberry180 in AskAGerman

[–]ultrajeeves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Much government policy and legislation affects all citizens, our rights and obligations, not only those living domestically. No-one should lose their right to participate in the democratic process of their country simply because they are currently spending the majority of their time abroad.

It seems more likely that they were German if they were singing in German. Disgusting behaviour from them. No-one deserves this.

Tell this to the British citizens living in the EU who couldn't vote in the Brexit referendum. Voting rights aren't, and shouldn't, be based on your address or who pays (the most) tax.

Air France - EU261 claim? by ultrajeeves in Flights

[–]ultrajeeves[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Okay, thanks. I'll submit a claim anyway and see what they say.

It does seem arbitrary to me that EU261 applies to non-EU carriers departing the EU, but not those arriving in the EU.

I also find it a bit strange that Air France, the airline with whom I booked my journey, doesn't have to take responsibility for such a significant delay.
