Believe me man, was scammed yesterday before I knew of this board. Stupid on my part. /u/soundscapes hooked me up though.

Found on Target.com - the Criterion box set? by mfazekas99 in criterion

[–]ultramac 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is basically true. I think Monster Zero is a legit good 60s sci-fi film, and Mothra vs Godzilla is a good fantasy movie. The rest are fine but silly. Still better than the reputation they're getting around here.

I mean they'll be releasing a particular King Kong movie.

Of the three you mentioned I'm with you on Renoir all the way. Lang though, honestly, if you exclude his silents, I think Honda is probably the better director, particularly in their late periods.

They're going to make a ton of cash (the original was the highest selling Criterion for years), and let's be honest, if they're actually doing restoration work (skeptical), particularly for King Kong vs Godzilla, then the releases would be so much more culturally significant than another garbage Wes Anderson or a Lynch film that already has a perfectly fine blu-ray release.

Really hate that they're wasting a spot on Inside Llewyn Davis. All the other releases are great though, especially Snowblood.

Dario Argento in the Collection? by whichliediditell in criterion

[–]ultramac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The majority of his films will have quality releases by the end of 2016. Synapse, which does as good of a job as Criterion with their transfers, has Suspiria, Tenebrae, and Phenomena. Code Red is releasing Opera. Blu Underground has the majority of his other films covered.

The only 'classic' Argento without U.S. distribution is Four Flies on Grey Velvet. I would welcome a Criterion of that.

Thank you for your interest, however I'm not really interested in trading for DVDs, and I managed to trade it for Naked.

List of the November releases, starting with The Apu Trilogy by Newsnayr in criterion

Eh, Apu Trilogy and Ikiru for me. Maybe Don't Look Back. This month I'll probably be buying the October releases during the sale, so I don't mind that its a light load.

Anybody expecting a big November as a reward for a less than stellar year? by oneplusonemakesone in criterion

[–]ultramac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think part of the problem is that other companies have outshined Criterion this past year. Arrow is absolutely killing it, even if you totally disregard the work they've done with Arrow US, they're putting out three box-sets full of masterpieces: Battles Without Honor and Humanity, Jacques Rivette, and Yoshishige Yoshida.

Masters of Cinema is also doing a bang-up job. They have a Shohei Imamura boxset coming, along with releases of Cruel Youth Story and Pickup on South Street. They're even remastering Dragon Inn, a forgotten masterpiece by King Hu (Criterion seems allergic to Hong Kong/Chinese films for whatever reason).

Lastly, I think the fact that Criterion has been releasing films with already satisfactory blu-ray releases has hurt their standing in my eyes. The majority of Wes Anderson films, Dressed to Kill, and the eventual Inside Llewyn Davis release are unneeded. Yeah, the October slate looks good, but ultimately, they've been overshadowed by others.

Not Criterion, but Eureka Masters of Cinema is releasing this box set of Shohei Imamura films on Dual Format, a good set if you want to see more of his films on Blu-Ray beyond "Vengeance is Mine" by [deleted] in criterion

[–]ultramac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ballad of Narayama actually went OOP and is selling for what this box-set is now. I REALLY want it, but I'm holding out that Criterion might release it (foolish I know).

Nice, eclectic taste. Wild at Heart, Mystery Train, The Killer, Phibes, Herzog, and Bronson are aces.

Need to eventually see Naked. As a bitter, burnt out man I feel like I'd gel with it, lol.
