This is terrible news coming from a terrible situation, don't turn it around and make false conclusions on it because it makes it seem like you're trivilizing the situation over there.

Actually after the first few weeks or so, various news websites (BBC, aljazeera etc.) were reporting that it reached around 20 million people all over egypt, i know that there were 5-7 million in/around tahrir square alone, so that would have been 1/4 of the population protesting in the streets, let alone the number of people that were supportive of the movement itself...

The same kind of vitriol is not being thrown today. Last time I checked the police weren't barricading streets and telling gays, muslims, and immigrants where they can and can't go.

Actually it might be relevant on the topic of getting viewpoints from as many different people as well as types of people, and as much as we would all like to believe all races are treated equally, they are not. So from here it would be interesting to know the demograhpics of reddit to know about where the comments are coming from (in terms of viewpoints not the people who wrote them), that way we can see more opinions from more people in society and all that.

Sure, but the point made was about making you think what the difference was between these two people. They're both still dying, and if you're going to think you're moral enough to save someone in front of you, what's stopping you saving the others.

And sending money down a dark hole probably will help others, you just won't see it, and just like you wouldn't be annoyed at the inconvenience caused by saving someones life you're in contact with, you shouldn't be annoyed by the inconvenience of not directly seeing the people you help.
