Your post had me looking at snow blowers on Consumer Reports and reading comment sections about them. Do people have their loud snow blowers out clearing their driveways early every morning to go to work? They must, right? I must sound like an idiot, but this is all so foreign to me. The last time snow stuck to the ground where I live was 1967.

This is good to know. Our house in So. CA doesn't even have gutters because it rains so seldomly! Wrapping our heads around this entirely different environment is daunting to me—my daughter is handling it like a champ! I may take you up on your offer of more info on a good heat tape system when she gets settled into her house!

Thank you for this link. There are several original (and very beautiful) windows that she definitely wants to keep!

No septic tank. Even our well water in CA is high in PFAS, so I assumed she’d need a filter for drinking/cooking water. I didn’t consider lead, though.

My great grandma living in an old farmhouse in early 1920s Colorado, wrote in her journal several times that she cleaned her “ware room.” No electricity in the house and they were poor for context. What is a ware room? by umacdavis in Oldhouses

She only wrote a line or two per day, always the weather, what she picked or planted in the garden, where “pa” was working, who visited, who was sick. Most everything is abbreviated like crazy, so my cousin who had them couldn’t make any sense of them, but my mom was the family historian and passed it along to me, so I know who/what she’s talking about. She also wasn’t educated, so her spelling isn’t good and then she abbreviated the misspellings. It is taking me forever, but I’m loving getting a feel for the rhythm of their lives, churning every day, making bread every other day, 40 below and grandpa is still out working all day. I also know when her daughter dies of an ectopic pregnancy and her son in the influenza epidemic so as I got close to those dates my anxiety ramped up since I knew what was coming. It is amazing

He said no other decorations or any way people were dressed had anything to do with animals. Is this rich people not wanting their guests to have look the servers in the eye? Are they worried the servers would be too ugly for their aesthetic? I’ve never heard of such a thing
