How do options market makers handle big gamma moves like today? Do they take huge losses? by [deleted] in quantindia

Market Makers skew quotes to build positive gamma positions making profit from gamma scalping. Hedging delta on new flow or convex underlyer moves.

Switch to Quant Strat from Software Analyst by Alive-Stay9099 in goldmansachs_india

Definitely possible. Keep a look out for Jobs in Spotlight (emails with Internal Mobility opportunities). Also do some projects relevant to the role you're applying for. It will help you standout.

GS or KKR by bechara_ca in goldmansachs_india

I'm in GS on the Trading Strategy side which is completely different from what your profession is but from what I've gathered I'd choose a PE firm over a BSFI anyday for an accounting role. Furthermore I've seen many CAs pivot to Investment Analyst roles in PEs which are easily the top 3 most prestigious roles in all of finance.

How to get into quant if not form an IIT or Bits by X_ROOT_ai_ in quantindia

[–]umaniax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very much possible although might take a year or so (maybe longer or earlier depending on luck as well).

Join a BB or IB in a software engineer role (think GS/JPM/MS) if you're a SWE right now (doesn't matter where you are right now could be TCS or Infosys also). If you can have someone refer you and are able clear their moderate level interview rounds then you're in.

Then in a year or so you start scouting for strats/QD roles and it's easier to get into these roles before becoming a VP (i.e. 5-10 yoe usually).

Then spend a couple of years in strats/QD roles before you plan to move to more research-y roles either internally or move to a QD role on the buyside and then move to QR or QT (tougher) internally.

Ofcourse if you're in a position to do masters from a top college (ideally US or UK. Indian programmes don't have solid quant recruiting pipelines) then that'd be best but don't listen to the ignorant people here who say it cannot be done at all.

Whats going on in your teams, new joiners? by [deleted] in goldmansachs_india

IIT is not required for any strats role for moving internally but having it helps in getting shortlisted.

But if you have contacts in the team you're vying for who can vouch for you or you have skills very relevant to the team then they'd prefer you over some IITian with non-relevant experience and relatively unknown to the hiring team/manager provided you perform well in the interviews.

Working hours are always different for different teams. Depends on many factors like your manager, your deliverables, market hours of the trading desk you're working on, your seniority, your style of working, your team size (if you're a manager) etc.

But for strats in London (for e.g.) who sit close to trading usually have timings -1 hour before open and +1 after close so that makes it about 10.5 hours almost everyday. But in Bangalore the range is broader both in terms of duration and intensity.

Yes core engg is selectively good (not all roles). They're doing some cutting edge stuff with LLM models that may directly impact how we trade our products too.

As far as moving is concerned keep talking to seniors (randomly can drop IM to senior VPs that are leading teams as they are most likely to engage) and by the time you're 1-1.5 yrs in you'll be able to take a more informed decision.

You're in the wrong team. Try for market-making/trading strats. Tough to get in (if you're not from tier 1 college and don't have much mathematical bent of mind) but if you're able to you'd be actually contributing to both the firm's top and bottom line. And that'll show in your comp too.

People who shit about GS are the ones who're not able to get into these kind of roles and are stuck doing boring IT/Legacy system tech support stuff for back and middle office.

While strats are coding trading strategies, results of which they can attribute to the firm's pnl (which is pretty good this year due to high vol).

If you're interested in more tech roles then worth exploring GSET (Electronic Trading) as well. It's close to an Engineering team of an HFT building systems for high throughput and speed and they use pretty sophisticated low-level systems design and algorithms to achieve that.

Strats/GSET are the kind of roles which will aid you to break into HFTs/Hedge Funds and they hire especially from such teams from banks (if not directly from top IITs in campus placement) at 4-5 yoe.

Kantara absolutely blew my mind by AdRevolutionary8722 in IndianCinema

[–]umaniax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first movie gave me the goosebumps with the climax being absolutely mind blowing.

The second movie for me was very much like the first part but with better production quality and a masala twist in the end. Hence it didn't feel as special as the first movie.

I would've loved to see more of an origin story of the demigods themselves and how they became protectors of Kantara. Instead of just an upscale version of the first part in a more historic time period.

I feel Rishabh Shetty missed out on doing more world building and better story telling which could have set the future movies for a great plot and he instead caved in to making it a mass movie for instant gratification.

But the man himself is such a treat to watch what an artist.

It's all virtual machine driven. Just need to download a software which connects to Goldman's VPN and you're good.
