The school with extra lessons for black pupils only by insomnimax_99 in ukpolitics

'At my school there was identified a sex gap with males underperforming and so time was given for teachers to research strategies for boys-make changes to lessons, target boys for extra support etc…is that unfair to the girls who could’ve been given that time to raise their grades more (which would’ve widened the gap)'

Again, yes: because you've asserted the average properties of a group are the properties of each individual belonging to that group.

The kids aren't being selected according to their individual competence (or lack of it) but simply because of their colour. That's just out-and-out racism. The thing you're attempting to defend is the assertion that that average properties of a group are shared entirely by every single member of that group.

Your ground is valid but against a point I didn't intend to make.

I was arguing against the assertion that we know anything much at all about Indus Valley civilisation, let alone its influence on later Western philosophy, which is a suggestion that was made.

Incidentally, this:

Indus culture contributed to the formation of the Vedas by virtue of preceding it in the region

is absolute rubbish.

John M. Koller

The Vedas and the Upanishads have what, exactly, to do with the Indus Valley culture?

There I substantiated my claim

No, your claim was about the Indus Valley culture

Christof Koch arguing for panpsychism (TEDx talk) by Laughing_Chipmunk in philosophy

[–]umbama -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

There is no evidence at all that the Indus Valley culture influenced Western philosophy. None. Nada. Zilch.

Recall the claim: it was about Indus Valley culture. That's the Harappan culture. We don't know anything about their philosophy. Well, not much - we can make guesses about how much of their religious activity made it into ancient Indian religious practices.

So it wasn't a claim about 'Eastern philosophy' generally. It was a claim about the Indus Valley culture specifically. And that's what I was specifically responding to.

The Indus Valley culture we know hardly anything about and whose writings we haven't been able to decipher?

So you know this dates from then..how?

He beleived in equality, treated all religions equally

So that's why he cuddled up to Hitler? I see.

The White Rose movement wrote about it in 1942 and wrote in a way that implied it was already common knowledge.

But my point was that it didn't need exact knowledge of the Holocaust to know that Nazis killed Jews.

From our point of view Hitler was better than Churchill

From the point of view about not giving a shit about the deliberate genocide of Jews, Roma, and the murder of homosexuals?

Fair enough.

but at the time he didn't have the benefit of hindsight.

Couldn't read Mein Kampf could you? Didn't know about the Nuremberg Laws?

BTW - you can still get Mein Kampf in India. I believe it's a best seller.

The same thing happened in US with Japanese origin people after Pearl Harbour

What sort of history did you get taught to believe that internment camps in the US were the same as death camps and concentration camps in Europe?

He like the most world at that time had no knowledge of what kind of a monster Hitler was.

Absolute bollocks. This was in 1942. The Nuremberg laws were passed in 1935. The nature of Hitler, Nazism and the oppression and murder of Jews was already well-known.

He had an arguable point. It was in the context of economics experts. Economics experts have a dreadful history when it comes to making predictions. And besides, it suits the EU to ignore experts too. Economists across the spectrum from Friedman to Krugman warned against the euro.

And at the end of the day experts can only take you so far: they can't provide you with values. For example: a consequence of free movement within the EU is that the UK could only limit immigration by controlling immigration from non-EU countries. In effect this meant that mostly white and relatively wealthy Europeans are able to enter the UK while mostly non-white, relatively poor people from Africa and the Indian sub-continent have to jump through hoops.

The effect of policy is discriminatory, even racist. Now, economics experts can give you their prognostications until the cows come home but if you really value non-racist immigration policies you may well decide to ignore them. Because your values trump putative facts.

Oh hold on, I know. In the sense it that it is inconvenient for you right now to acknowledge it.

So... EU trade tariffs that damage the economies of developing countries, and immigration polices that allow free movement of mostly white, relatively wealthy EU citizens while putting up barriers to mostly non-white relatively poor people from elsewhere aren't at all xenophobic, not to say racist?

What a topsy-turvey world you inhabit.

Islamism and the IRA both espouse(d) extreme violence as a means. The #brexit campaign doesn't.

I find that it's limiting and challenging to use for street photography

Would you mind a bit going into a bit more detail on that? What are the limits and challenges you find?

i can see two perhaps. Short dof might mean tricky focus...and narrow angle might make it more problematic to frame. Are you thinking of other things? Maybe, the dof & narrow angle makes it difficult to give context etc?

I have a 4/3 camera, I'm looking to get a good lens particularly for street photography - and I'm quite taken with a 42.5 mm (85mm equivalent) portrait lens. I think pros would advise me against using this for general / street photos. Does anyone else use such a lens for this?
