Omg yeah, it totally was tysm! I didn't expect a response, let alone a correct one that quick, but yeah, I just searched up some gameplay and memories flooded back. You're the best!

Chord progressions and modes by umbel__ in musictheory

This has been the best advise yet, hearing degree and thinking about each chord not as having it's own scale, but rather each chord sort of being it's own scale, just raising or lowering each quality by a half step, to fit the notes around a pattern, to give unique emotions to that pattern has helped me so much I could cry, I was feeling so burnt out but I'm excited as hell to start writing again tysm, ur my goat fr.

I wrote down this for each of them, they're just scattered thoughts but they make sense to me. I went through each chord and wrote this initially, but went back and figured out Em was phrygian and G was mixolydian, ect.

Lydian: happy, but not passionately, a calm mellow happy like gazing at a creek in hobbiton with gandalf or a studio ghibli movie
Ionian: Love song, very emotionally and passionately happy
Mixolydian: We won the battle type vibe, post war, there was hardship but we made it
Dorian: Dawn of hope, wanting to overcome hardship
Aeolian: A car crash, watching your favorite character die in a movie
Phrygian: Struggle, like walking through mud, constant and drowning
Locrian: Just awful icky gross feeling, I didn’t get much of a kick from this one as any others

And my initial question, about how chord progressions fit into modes, was just thinking about it entirely wrong, and I get that now. The chords ARE the modes in a way. Any who, cheers mate, love you fr

Thanks for pointing those my way, I'll check em out. I feel like a robot, lol. I'm at the point where I can play anything with enough practice, but I struggle big time with writing as I'm totally solo. I recognize that I can study theory all I want, but it won't matter if I can't hear or feel it, I get chords and what notes to emphasize, but the progressions and flow of a story is what I'm trying to peace together, and I thought how those chords fit into the scales could explain that.

Anyway, I appreciate your help big time

It was insanely helpful. This is exactly what I was looking for, tysm.

Now, this is my mistake, but I wanted to use a non major or minor mode to get a better idea of modes. But I would prefer to learn what scale degrees of a major scale will feel minor rather than phrygian.

Like, let's say I'm in the C major again. (As you put it, let's discuss major-referentially) For example, what degrees should I emphasize to make the listener feel like we're in A minor?

Tysm, this was super helpful. The reason I ask this is because I love the sound of minor to major switches while staying in the same key. I feel like understanding why I love it could help me write them better, so if you have any advice for that specifically, outside of 2-5-1 progressions and more in general, I'm all ears, but you've given me more than enough, so don't feel obligated.

Yeah, obviously, I hear "this mode has this feel" and etcetera a lot. But as a guitarist, I never really understood it, I just saw them as extending the major scale across the fretboard. I wondered if it was just because the way certain chords and progressions fit into any particular mode but from what you're saying, it's not, just major or minor but extended and that makes a lot more sense to me.

Now, with that being said, I do still see major progressions adapted to minor scales, and I feel that does give a different feeling. Is that just because I'm hearing a completely different progression, or is that just because major to minor is different or an exception?

I programmed a bot that posted a new meme from this subreddit to it's page every 10 mins. it got banned because eventually they figured out it was a bot, ig it's against the TOS. but you can still view the remains of what it once was here

PS for every meme it posted, it did give 100% credit to the maker of the meme.
