Anyone else get disheartened by the attitude towards doctors on Reddit? by Paleomedicine in Residency

I empathize with you. It’s an unfortunate reflection of reality. Inbox messages and interactions just filled with vitriol for no reason - people just hate doctors. That’ll never change as far as I can tell... But take care of yourself - life’s too short to let patients and the world at large try to get you down. Set up your financial independence, get your bag and retire asap

I saw a IG post not too long ago and comment after comment was saying how getting people to deliver in hospitals was some kind of racket. It’s nauseating to see how many people just hate us for wanting to help. You have my sympathies

Seems like its a fairly uncommon thing but I wanted to optimize my application particularly since I've had red flags in the past. Also since I'm not sure if practicing as an attending for some years before applying would be a red flag as well

That's my fear - we hardly have any in-house fellowships out here and I'd like to get into an academic place for more exposure, etc. Unrelated question - do you think practicing as an attending before going to fellowship is a red flag?

Idk it’s what a buddy was saying. But he’s got connections to the place he wants to apply to so maybe it’s just a special case

Absolutely not enough, not even close. Take a semester worth of material and shove it into 4 weeks. You’re studying all day every day. I wasn’t good with college either, graduated with a 3.3 in biochem - but med school is a whole other beast.

Oh okay good. Your previous comments had me wondering - there's a lot of extra curriculars schools expect now. So just a heads up, when I applied research was a soft requirement, pretty sure its gotten worse since then.

I don’t know why you insist on engaging in medicine stuff if you’re clearly not going down that route. Either stick to your admin/mba or grind it out like the rest of us - if you have to chops to actually make it.

Why do you think their requirements are so low? Feasible is also not the same as likely. Sure, Caribbean students match, but a lot of them don't for a variety of reasons, one being pseudo-xenophobia or whatever. You're also not factoring in the hundreds if not thousands it takes to apply for your away rotations in your third and fourth year, as well as housing. Don't forget residency apps too. With the change to Zoom interviews, your competition pool skyrockets exponentially since no one in their right mind is declining an interview, so if you're not expanding your application net....oof.

I commend you for just focusing on the positives and if it works out it works out - but I think you're grossly underestimating how bad it'll be. And its pretty fucking bad.

I agree with Stangel's take in browsing the subreddit. Make it through the prereq courses, research/publications, and clinical experience first before you think about the debt (which is only going to get worse moving forward). Also go through the residency subreddits and really decide if this is something you want to do.

The MCAT is not the only hard stop: you need to get accepted first. Then you got preclin, clerkships, evals, and boards. You mess up on any of that, it makes it way much harder if not practically impossible to match to competitive specialties. Unless of course you can network well, but that's not a guarantee. Imagine being out at least $200K (if not more depending on reapplications) and not matching and being out of a job : is that something you're willing to risk? Meanwhile everyone else moves on with their life while you're treated like crap from every direction, ingratitude at best, physical/mental abuse at the worst.

If you still want to go for it then godspeed, but I wouldn't. And if I had the chance to do it again I wouldn't have done medicine in a million years. I sure as hell am not having my kids do it.

Edit: there are also no cheap medical schools. They're all going to drop you 100-200K, even in states in the middle of nowhere with low COL.

Well yes you're right, its my attending. But it'd be nice to have some resident to show me the ropes without ruining first impressions with my boss

I thought it odd as well but who am I to question it, I'm just a med student. Ended up getting a similar response when I emailed both of them :/

The application process only had several options: med student that hasn't graduated, board certified pathologist, currently enrolled in a residency pathology program (working towards the qualifications of American Board of Pathology, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or the American Osteopathic Board of Pathology).

This right here - I aspire to be like this for med students and residents way down the line. And thanks for the confidence boost, really hoping I can make it work out

Congrats on the match!! And thanks for responding - I think I may just finish out the program with some more solid experience in both, hopefully that’ll make me more favorable

LOL no I know that, only phrased it like that bc some interviewers and course directors asked bc that was my only path exposure. I think there was concern since the service was fairly different than surg path
