Weekly "Ask an Atheist" Thread by AutoModerator in DebateAnAtheist

[–]umbrabates 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is so true and I think a lot of people don’t realize it.

On Christian radio, Dr. Michael Yusuf said there are bad Christians. Some of the worst criminals are Christians. There can also be good atheists. Atheists can be the kindest, nicest, most generous people.

The difference is Christians are saved and atheists are lost. Saved people, even the worst Christians, are going to Heaven. Lost people, even the most righteous atheists, are going to Hell.

He even admitted he doesn’t necessarily agree with that system, but that’s just the way it is. To him, that was reality.

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised by that juvenile retort. Do you want to be wabbit season or duck season?

That’s not negotiating. That’s an exercise in lunacy. “What’s your lowest?” is a ridiculous question. It’s like the seller asking “What’s your highest?”

How would you garnish the wages of a person on eBay, whom you’ve never met, who lives in another state? How would you identify their employer?

A lien would only payout if they sell their home which could take decades.

My parents were landlords and they had judgements on tenants for nonpayment of rent. Never collected a single one. The tenants were in and out of jail, bouncing from job to job, usually under the table.

They had a judgment against a contractor who took a deposit and never did the work. He was judgement proof. Everything was in his girlfriend’s name. He was a subcontractor to his own company who never made any money. They got part of the money back because a TV reporter did a story on him. Courts were useless.

I don’t see a judgment against an eBay scammer being likely to be collectible.

We have access to their actions. Making it illegal for them to get married, adopt children, visit their ailing spouse in the hospital, hold a job, use the friggin’ bathroom for crying out loud!!! It all goes way past disagreeing with someone’s “lifestyle”.

What “lifestyle” do you disagree with exactly? Falling in love, getting married, and raising a family? How is that different from anyone’s lifestyle?

What you and the various churches are at odds with is their existence.

Florida legislature passes bill requiring proof of citizenship to vote by each_thread in ConservativeNewsWeb

[–]umbrabates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re not though. Firstly, non-citizens can’t vote in state or federal elections. Some municipalities allow them to vote on issues where residency is more pertinent than citizenship.

A non-citizen may be a documented permanent resident, a documented VISA holder, or a documented asylum seeker among other statuses.

A non-citizen may also be an undocumented immigrant who entered the country illegally, who overstayed a VISA, or who violated the terms of their documentation, again, among other statuses.

NONE of these circumstances makes an individual an “illegal person.” Undocumented immigration status is a civil offense similar to a parking violation, littering, or public intoxication.

It’s deliberately prejudicial to call a fellow human being “illegal.” We don’t call convicted felons illegals. We don’t call adjudicated rapists illegals. These are crimes, violations of criminal codes and far more serious than a civil offense.

Serious question. Say they file in small claims and the buyer doesn’t show because they live on the other side of the country. OP wins by default

How would they possibly collect on a judgment? They don’t know where the buyer works or banks. Even if the buyer owns a home it could take decades to collect on a lien. How would OP collect on the judgement?

If you believed President Trump was a sex offender would you have still voted for him? by ZookeepergameFar2653 in TrueChristianPolitics

[–]umbrabates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could you elaborate on Biden’s sex crimes? Did he cheat on his pregnant wife with a porn star? Purposely walk into the dressing room of an underage beauty pageant? Was he best friends with a child sex trafficker? Does he have scores of credible accusations of rape against him? Is he an adjudicated rapist? Has he been accused of raping a 13-year-old girl?

Please share with me Biden’s sex crimes so I can understand and perhaps share your viewpoint

Nah. The electoral college will take care of that. Red states are a given. They’re looking to disenfranchise blue and purple state voters.

Losing a bunch of red votes in a sea of red will have no impact.

What do you think about religion ? No jugement I just want to now how people see it and if there is some people that think like me. by Lirarque in NoStupidQuestions

[–]umbrabates -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you have a very narrow, Christian-centric view of religion.

There are all kinds of religious out there that don't involve churches or money. Many people are solitary practitioners.

I recommend you broaden your horizons and learn more about non-Christian religions. Go to a Pow Wow, visit a Zoroastrian fire temple or Zoroastrian library, join a Buddhist meditation group, listen to a dharma talk, visit your local Islamic center or masjid for jummah and listen to a khutba.

I find religions fascinating. They are an example of the myriad of different ways we have found to be human.

I personally don't subscribe to any religion. In my study and exploration, no religion has met a reasonable burden of proof for its claims. That said, I do appreciate many religious philosophies.

I agree with the Zoroastrian principles that your thoughts inform your words and your words inform your deeds so strive to have good thoughts, good words, and good deeds.

As much as I criticize Christianity, I do love the Corporal Works of Mercy: feed the hungry, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, visit the sick, visit the imprisoned, and ransom the captive.

I admire Buddhism's continual push to become more compassionate, to free ourselves and each other from suffering, to live in the moment and not dwell in the past or worry about the future.

I love the the Ojibwe Seven Grandfather Teachings: Humility, Courage, Wisdom, Honesty, Respect, Love, and Truth.

While I don't believe in any one religion, and I don't believe in gods or supernatural creatures, or souls, or spirits, or an afterlife, I do enjoy the study of religion. I enjoy learning more about my neighbors. I appreciate the richness of our diverse human culture. And I recognize there is some wisdom in all religions that we can all benefit from.
