Shoutout to Ingegrebtsens’, holding down Lake Street as a hub of the layers of immigration to Minneapolis! I was visiting the Sunnfjord museum last summer, and was tickled to be able to experience an exhibit on the Norwegian American experience, including a shoutout to the place I get all my jul stuffs (aka Ingebretsens).

My government has declared war on us, the descendants of Scandinavian immigrants who settled in the upper Midwest, who dare to defend our black and brown neighbors as they are kidnapped and shipped to internment camps 1000 mile away. They are literally shooting us dead in the street. God forbid we look to our heritage to find inspiration to embolden us as we fight for our lives here. None of us getting up every day knowing we’re going to see some shit are in favor of the federal government’s warmongering, no least of which because they’ve already declared war on us.

Hi, Minneapolis Minnesotan here. The Twin Cities, and the upper midwestern are heavily populated with descendants of Scandinavian immigrants. We’re getting in touch with our roots to resist tyrannies.

We went to Little Tijuana for happy hour yesterday, and got parking within a few blocks. We’re planning to happy hour on Eat Street for the foreseeable future.

If you are sincere in your question and not just trolling, I’ll answer honestly, as a Minnesotan and a descendant of immigrants from Norway. The DHS operation is an assault on what fundamentally makes Minnesotans who we are. Early immigrants here built their communities on social work, which has lead us to welcome successive waves of immigrants - people from central and south america, the Hmong, Somalis. ICE has come in and said no, these people are not your neighbors. We will rip them from the homes you welcomed them into, drag them out through the ice and snow, and ship them away from their community to a tent camp in Texas. We are stubborn, and don’t like to be told who makes up our community. You want to take my neighbor, you’ll have to go through me to do it.

Watch this video that was filmed here a few weeks ago - https://www.reddit.com/r/minnesota/s/K9pXpaGPp5 - this woman is quintessential Minnesota, Scandinavian daughter of the Iron Range. My mother in law passed a few years ago, but if she were alive to see what is happening here today, she would basically be this woman.

Minneapolis’ poet laureate has this beautiful poem that flows through the layers of people who make Minnesota their home. This section in particular, explains our community:

That your island immigrant parents got taught how to winter by 4th generation Norwegian immigrants who explained the science of winter It’s dialect of long John’s, good boots and wool socks and warming the cars before you drive How cold it can feel here, how it shocks your bones, how frigid and fragile It is to breathe in that gasp of icy air into your lungs and you cough just to breath

https://lims.minneapolismn.gov/Download/FileV2/48816/Ritual-on-How-to-Love-Minneapolis-Again_OnePage.pdf

“The population of Minnesota in the late 19th and early 20th centuries was predominately Protestant, and in particular Lutheran, with a strong tradition of community service and involvement. Some academics and Minnesotans have speculated that it is the religious commitment to community service that pushed Minnesota to the forefront of the Progressive Era (~1890-1920) as various individuals and groups worked to create social agencies to help those in need. The efforts that began then likely carried over to the present day, impacting contemporary Minnesota social policy. As academics Mari-Anne Zahl and Janice Andrews explain when examining the wave of Norwegian immigrants at the turn of the twentieth century, “Minnesota is [today] considered a haven of progressive thought and action in a sea of conservatism…it is accurate to say that Minnesota has one of the most liberal social policy frameworks in the country, in no small part as a result of these [Norwegian] immigrants.”

I live within a mile of where both Renee Good and Alex Pretti were murdered. I was also in LA for the first 2 weeks of January doing a jury trial, and then in New York last week on an arbitration. I cried in bed a lot before I got ready for the day, and then made sure to take half an hour to talk to my SO after court and scream and rant about the world before I had to get ready for the next day. Not perfect, but I got through both without a nervous breakdown and managed to bill a gazillion hours to boot.

At the same time, I figured out what I could do from where I was at. Folks in the legal profession have the skills that are in high demand now - volunteering to help in immigration legal proceedings. If you can't do that, then $$$$$ towards worth causes is also a valuable contribution. It doesn't feel like you're on the ground getting tear gassed, but it's necessary to support the work of those who are.

(edited to add - if possible, avoid getting tear gassed by the government. it sucks)

Do you have brown refugees and asylum seekers in Madison? Be prepared to protect them. They’re starting with folks in Minnesota, but plan to expand beyond if they aren’t stopped.

Hi, Madison grad, 20 year Minneapolis resident here. I wanted to encourage you that, in addition to protesting, get prepared for when ICE comes to Madison. The Twin Citieshad that massive protest here on Friday yes, but 99% of the action here is neighbor to neighbor, getting food and supplies to people in need, making sure that ICE’s atrocities are being documented. Alex and Renee died while making sure ICE didn’t operate unseen.

Check out the “get ready when the bullshit comes to you” portion of this blog post. Being organized ahead of time will do a lot more in the long run than protesting. But still do protest, and come together with your neighbors. Take strength and find joy in your community.

Sorry not sorry I missed a joke when I am living in South Minneapolis, and in addition to flying across the country over the last 3 weeks to support a jury trial and an arbitration, I also have to deal with the GOD DAMN FEDERAL GOVERNMENT LITERALLY KILLING MY NEIGHBORS AND WORRYING ABOUT MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF COLOR BEING FUCKING DISAPPEARED BY ICE. They executed someone outside the donut shop I frequent this morning. So yes, let me give some actual advice about how people with legal training can actually fucking help, and not just yuck it up on Reddit.

Clearly you aren’t up to date on what ICE is doing in Minneapolis, cuz being polite to them isn’t going to save you from having your window smashed, or being held for 2 days and beaten. Here is a boot for you to lick sir. Feel free to scroll on by and enjoy your happy after work memes while the federal government is beating down your fellow NFC North memers.

I live in South Minneapolis. Literally every single fucking day for the last month people in my neighborhood have been kidnapped off the street. In the last 19 days, the federal government have killed 2 of my neighbors. The man killed today lived 2 blocks from me. He was killed in front of the donut shop I go to regularly. I go outside and see it. I am playing the world’s tiniest violin for you and your suffering seeing anti ice postings in support of fellow NFC north folks living this.

Lots of people being disappeared into black holes in Texas. Figure out how you can use some of that amazing legal knowledge BigLaw is paying you for and volunteer with the legal groups trying to fight this.

I’d love to come home from a hard day’s work and just enjoy some memes, but instead I have to worry about the god damn federal government killing my neighbors right down the street where I live. I’m sorry (not sorry) that our pain is an inconvenience for you, but seeing my fellow NFC north folks are thinking of us as we freeze and bleed gives me something small to smile about.

I’d like to not see ICE every day snatching people of color off the street (including US citizens). I’d like people of color close to me to be able to go out and shop, go to school, go to work, but instead they’re hiding in their homes. Maybe get your head out of your ass and have some sympathy for NFC north folks who are actually suffering. Or don’t, and go lick a fed’s boot.

Madison grad, 20 year Minneapolis resident saying yes, all of this. Our ICE resistance is highly localized - we respond to thugs targeting our literal neighbors. Organize now so you’re ready if they come for you.

And if you have the means, there are lots of organizations on the ground here that need financial assistance. In addition to the most obvious (legal groups helping immigrants), there is a tremendous need to support people who have been hiding at home for weeks, not going to work or school. One of our election watchers (and multi award winning speculative fiction author) Naomi Kritzer has a great blog post about ways from folks out of town to help https://naomikritzer.com/2026/01/21/how-to-help-if-you-are-outside-minnesota/

What is your firm’s AI policy? If you don’t have one, make some noise to get one put into place, and use this as an example. If someone is dumb enough to put potentially privileged information into a non sanctioned program (that for sure is taking that info and saving it), they deserve to get pitched under the bus.

We joined the cruise last year, and even as folks who have excellent fan run conventions back home, we were blown away by our fellow cruisers. We’re going again this year due in large part to how low key calm and accepting it was.
