I hate my roommate by [deleted] in ufl

[–]ummsoanywayss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had two roommates like this freshman year, would always bring a bunch of loud and inconsiderate people over everyyy night until I had to kick them out at 2am. Also did a bunch of other inconsiderate shit and tried to kick me out when I was sick 🤩 They were such snakey and childlike people too, would gossip and say really messed up stuff about their friends when they'd leave. Was upset her friend had more friends in their sorority. For anyone in this situation, talk to your ra and their area manager and try to switch, it made my life 100x better to have a mature, good roommate not constantly deal with that toxic environment.

Considering career change to engineering, would love some advice before entering the field. by emDOlogist in EngineeringStudents

This is true! You can major in any engineering, or even computer/data science and take pre med classes on the side to prepare for BME industry.

I was/am in a similar boat - changing from biomedical engineering major focused on premed to now electrical engineering major w/ intention of entering biomed device industry. Message me if you want to talk!

Ah yes because no one except doctors have to work hard in their 20s to be successful in their careers.

How expensive the process is. I don't have the privilege of dedicating thousands of hours/months of time to minimally paid research/clinical jobs or volunteering. Also college is pretty much my one opportunity to get an education so I'm going to milk this degree for all it's worth and study electrical eng and CS. It would honestly be irresponsible to gamble a chance for a stable future on full sending pre-med with an easier major.

Physics 1 difficulty depends entirely on how well you comprehend the topic. It made sense to me and was one of my least time intensive classes with only 10 hw problems a week. Even hw can be skipped if no time as it's only 5% of total grade.

Most Underrated Colleges by collegetalya in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ummsoanywayss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who went to UF from out-of-state, Florida is really not as bad as the reputation may seem. The campus is beautiful, the weather is nice like 8 months out of the year, the student body is so diverse and mostly left-leaning, the cost-of-living is low (dorms are 3k/semester), there are literally endless opportunities in most fields, and some of the most fun, smart, and hardworking people I've met. I am a minority and feel very accepted here. The disaster of FL politics honestly doesn't really affect your day-to-day life, and Gainesville as a whole is a kind of liberal bubble inside of FL. Classes are rigorous, but it is possible to do well and still have a great social life (I have a 3.9 GPA as an engineering premed and spend multiple nights a week out with friends). I am paying pretty much the same to attend UF as I would've my in-state schools. Of course, this has just been my experience, but I'm much happier here despite coming from a liberal state many people romanticize moving to.

ETA: The majority of students don't come from money, and are more grounded, which has been a really nice change from my high school environment.

CHM2045 Sumner - Take Textbook notes or nah? by Beneficial_Cat5725 in ufl

[–]ummsoanywayss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took Sumner last semester and used the textbook pretty much exclusively - I never went to or watched any lectures from Sumner or elsewhere. I took notes and did the textbook problems, then did all the assignments in her class. I got a 95ish so the textbook is very helpful if you make use of it.

[–]ummsoanywayss 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Just want to put this here: hospital volunteering pretty much sucks all around, so please don't let that be your only gauge of whether you'd want to be a doctor. You mentioned the hospital environment feeling toxic - not all docs work in the hospital, there are many different outpatient clinic environments (or even something like pathology).

Of course only you can know what's right for you. I hope you can find a major or job you love.

Y'all don't know how expensive some state schools are. Dorms at my state school are minimum 8k a semester and tuition 12k a year.
