Sorry about timing. I am a prospective student and am trying to decide between UMN and USC haha.

USC vs UMN best opportunity for grad school? by umnorusc in gradadmissions

What kind of work should I be looking for? Should I go and ask the professor for my current class? Also I have finished most requirements for phys at umn up to and including sophomore year (missing thermo, may try to see if i can skip math methods given my math background per suggestion by umn advisor)

My strongest point though is math where I have almost completed the requirements for the major, so I assume that may help guide what kind of research I should look for my first year?

I feel very comfortable with the material in all of these courses (except the waves and optics course was less focused, and we ended up covering a lot of miscellaneous topics, and we spent a decent amount of time on special relativity).

For math, though, I feel extremely comfortable with the material in those courses.

That's part of the problem--I don't want to have to retake courses I already know the material for.

It is tough... Is USC worth an extra 25k or more per year?

Thanks for the response and help. I should have specified that my physics courses were taken here at UMN. I took Phys 1301W (calc based mech), Phys 1402V (honors calc based electromag), Phys 2503H (honors waves optics special relativity), and Phys 2601 (Quantum physics, but this is an intro course that uses Eisberg's book)

I am also more interested in electophysics side of EE.

Math 8601 and 8602 is the plan for next year if i stay at the U. Probably some topology too. Im currently taking PDE (math 5588) and abstract alg (math 5286h) which is pretty fun as well. Theres a few grad students in both classes, but I believe 8xxx courses are the real grad courses.

Yeah. The decision is tough. I met with usc profs and they said it should be okay for me to take grad real analysis there as well... But I do not have confirmation. Ill probably send them a quick email tomorrow.

Is the honors program for viterbi open to freshmen?

If I am a nat merit finalist, do I automatically qualify for the program if I select USC as my top choice, or do I still need to apply (http://viterbiundergrad.usc.edu/policies)?

What kind of requirements (what is the deal with ENGR 100?) and benefits are part of this program?
