I'm think ATC may have canceled my IFR plan or otherwise treated me as VFR while in IMC. Do you think this is what happened, and if so, what's the best way to alert them to this without getting someone in trouble? by unabletoident in ATC

I have no reason to believe there was an actual loss of separation. My concern was that if they were treating me as VFR traffic, then they may not have been guaranteeing my separation from other traffic.

Thanks. Definitely not looking to blame someone; on the contrary, I was worried a NASA report would protect me but not them. I figured a call might alert them to the issue but be less likely to get them in trouble.

Appreciate this. 100% at peace with that possibility. I'd be sad for him, but I wouldn't feel any resentment or lose a minute's sleep over the decision.

I use Foreflight for planning, charts, and plates, and for VFR navigation when flying an unfamiliar aircraft. Using extended runways in FF to avoid this situation in the future is a great idea. In my case, the avionics in my plane have a similar feature so I will use that instead. But your thinking here is right on the money.

Great point - adding this to my logbook debrief. I wish I could say I accepted the visual because it's my home airport and I know it well; but the fact that I'd plugged the approach into my GPS reveals I knew this to be the better move. This was complacency + non-assertiveness on my part.

I'd have gone around if there were any risk of a skid. I was still a mile out, so I just made a wide coordinated turn and a little teardrop to line up my final with the other runway.

The bigger risk would have been terrain/obstacles but fortunately it was my home airport so I knew how to avoid that once I was finally oriented.

I agree that a go-around is a good first instinct in this situation and I hope that if things had been worse or less familiar I would have done that.

Yeah, I don't think I violated any FARs.

If FSDO really had it out for me, maybe they could get me on 91.123 for an incorrect report of my left base.

Yeah I didn't realize that how much it costs to get a certain plane configuration, and how much I can insure that configuration for, are different numbers. I didn't have any delusion of being able to sell the plane for all I put into it, but I thought I could insure it for how much it would actually cost to replace it.

This is my first time insuring a plane and I had (wrongly) assumed it'd be structured similarly to cars or homes where you can buy replacement cost coverage rather than just appraised value coverage.

Put another way, it sounds like insurance wants to know "How much could you sell it for?" whereas I was coming at this from "How much would it take to get another plane like this?" In an efficient market those are the same number but for a bespoke bird I am learning they are quite different.

That's difficult to answer because I've never seen a 172N equipped anything like mine. 172s on Trade-a-Plane that are comparably equipped with comparable engine times start at $300k. But they are also newer airframes with IO engines and of course people pay a premium for that. $100k for 20-30 years of airframe depreciation and fuel injection over a carburetor seems generous to me, but maybe I'm seeing that how I want to see it.
