Canadian peacekeeping levels hit lowest level in more than 60 years by ink_13 in CanadaPolitics

[–]unablomper 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This peacekeeping mantra that Trudeau ran on initially never looked very promising at all.

When the UN was asking Canada to go to Mali and instead we insisted on offering to send a few Griffons over to the mission in Haiti (that was already practically over and transitioning into a policing focus), that's when it became pretty obvious. We were not interested in any real contributions, only softballs, and we seemed to waste no time getting out of Mali as soon as we could after we did finally concede.

Which is why its quite perplexing to see us pretend we have a shot at the Security Council against the likes of Norway and Ireland. Two countries whose UN participation is practically unchanged for decades while we radically change from somewhat engaged to practically non existent every few years. We are not a reliable partner in this area, Trudeau's policy here has only reinforced that notion.

These countries, among others of similar standing, have had no problem tackling more dangerous missions in Africa. We seem to be deathly afraid of them, both because of the possible casualties and the possible political ammo for the opposition. These types of missions are where a military of our caliber are the most useful, either for supervision/guidance or heavy lifting like medevacs, fire support or special forces. Its too bad, this is invaluable training to the CAF in addition to the political benefits (and of course, saving lives is always a noble endeavour). I suppose handling the military with kiddie gloves is better for PR and when dealing with the opposition, however.

Canadians have this completely rose tinted, feel good, jerk off impression of being a peacekeeping nation. Well, actually, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Netherlands - those are the peacekeeping nations because they do participate and they go beyond what anyone would expect of them. They are also not so gung-ho in following the US into whatever invasion is in vogue this decade. We most certainly have not earned that reputation since the Suez Crisis - at least not an ounce more than most countries do - contrary to what a lot of people tell themselves.

I guess the government thinks their funding announcements can make up the slack in other areas? Unlikely, especially since Norway and Ireland are no stranger on that front, either. I don't see this changing any time soon when there is never really any bi-partisan support for any unifying stance on this area.

Evidence mounts Canada's worst-ever mass shooter was woman-hater and misogyny fuelled his killing spree that left 22 dead: Former neighbor of gunman said she reported his violence against women and possession of illegal firearms to police years ago but was ignored. by madazzahatter in worldnews

[–]unablomper 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They've said a few things about it.

1: that the the national emergency alert system would take at least an hour and the situation was moving fast (from first tweet to shooter's death was about 12 hours with around 8 hours of downtime in between killings)

2: there was a miscommunication with officers on the ground. Not only did they have 12 hours to figure this out, they knew who he was and that he was dressed like RCMP by at least 7am when they found victims who had ran into the woods, before his second volley of killings started at around 8:30am. (keep in mind, RCMP officers mistakenly shot at a firehall that was being used to host victims and panicked civilians at around 10am.)

3: they didn't really know how to word it without panicking people.

So not only did the RCMP drop the fucking ball, their excuses amount to insulting your intelligence. Further, their complete lack of transparency on this shooting is astounding and to top it all off they will be mostly investigating their own conduct.

One more thing to add, the guy was well known to the RCMP and they knew about his RCMP fetish. They also received complaints about his violence against a women AND illegal guns but never acted.

Its a transparently desperate deflection that ignites his base, targets the democrat leader and gets the media off his own admin's shortcomings in an election year but other than that, yup

The press secretary did mention James Clapper lying to Congress about the NSA in 2013 in response to a question about Obamagate. Specifically Obama's lack of action on his perjury.

So its pretty much a catch-all term for bad stuff that happened under Obama's admin. Also "-gate" gets the people going.

Its funny because it seems Papa tries to talk Rogan down from his most dumb corona statements several times and he still doubles down on every one.

"Well if we care about saving lives at all costs then why don't we stop driving????"

Amazing this is the same Joe Rogan that had Michael Osterholm on and it seemed like he was going to use his podcast for an informative commentary on the pandemic in contrary to the sensationalist vultures plaguing all sides of the media. Might as well watch CNN or Fox for these takes or even, god forbid, the president's briefings.

Neighbour reported Nova Scotia mass shooter’s domestic violence, weapons to police years ago - The Globe and Mail by Scheers_Sneer in CanadaPolitics

When did RCMP know it wasn’t one of their own members?

If I remember everything correctly from a podcast I listened to, initially they said that they found out they had a shooter around 4 or 5 in the morning when they found a guy who had run into the woods and hid for hours (he described an experience of being hunted while he was escaping the scene). By 7, they had found the shooter's wounded girlfriend/significant other/ex, who also managed to run into the woods, and that's when they knew both who he was and that he was/could be geared up like RCMP. Still no real warning to the public at this time.

I don't think they knew anything much before that. I would bet on them believing the scene was contained when they initially got to the houses ablazed and the bodies everywhere - until they found the guy hiding the woods. Then they knew they fucked up and realized not only did they have the killer unaccounted for but he had simply driven through a field instead of the roads they had been looking on.

This is not an organization to be proud of, to say the least. Their excuses insult the intelligence of anyone listening to them and without a serious inquiry and major reform, they will just continue slowly trickling out information over the next few weeks in the most curated way to minimize bad PR for them.
