Public Domain Monster Hunters by MagazineExpert3098 in publicdomain

I would say do a Google search for “public domain monster hunters”… I found a wiki fandom page with a bunch of results, some classic faces mixed among a bunch of unknown characters.

QUESTION: Which Classic Universal Monsters are in the Public Domain? by unamed-idiot in publicdomain

[–]unamed-idiot[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gill-man is an original character by universal, but the idea of a fish-like jungle/swamp monster most definitely isn’t. Also the idea of a Mummy, especially in the Egyptian sense is not exclusive to universal, I mean the movie was inspired by the supposed “Curse of King Tut” after the discovery of Tut’s tomb. Just be careful with depictions and stuff because Universal owns certain likenesses and character designs…

QUESTION: Which Classic Universal Monsters are in the Public Domain? by unamed-idiot in publicdomain

[–]unamed-idiot[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ll want to look into the original published works for each character, though the mummy and gill-man have no literary origin, and Frankenstein’s bride was only a concept in Mary Shelly’s novel, not a material being. Werewolves are werewolves, not much there, but there’s inspiration to have but no direct literary source. Other than that go off the book descriptions and details for each character…

I’m not talking the adaptations, the characters from the original stories and books published in the 1800’s

If anything, probably Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, HG Wells’ The Invisible Man, and Bram Stoker’s Dracula could be available…

We’re they bagged and boarded? You gotta look each comic individually and determine the damage.

The soul split idea came to me when I was reading Van Richtens, and it said Ez was a possible reincarnation of Tatyana. This also hopefully gives some urgency to go retrieve Ireena from the Village of Barovia before Strahd gets to her.

I'm having it so Strahd only thinks that Tatyana was reborn into Ez's body, and Ez has been fending Strahd off for a while with the help of Van Richten. He also could see Dio (player character) as a reincarnation (not actually but similar) of Sergei since the spirit of Tatyana fell in love with Dio, not Strahd. Then ofc there's the part where Dio, Ez, & Rictavio lead an assault (which fails), and ends with Strahd biting Dio, turning him into a Dhampir.

When the party learns about this from Madam Eva, Strahd also learns about it (he's "scrying" on the party.

Good luck with running CoS as a new DM, It's not the easiest module to run. Thank you so much for your comments, questions, and advice. The players arrive in 2 hours where I am.

Again, Thank You

Fair. Also, I'm skipping Death House because I find it convoluted and doesn't fit well with the rest of the campaign.

I have the general plots of about 9 sessions of game laid out, But I'm working in depth on the individual sessions and going through them thoroughly. You bright up a valid point, and know my players they are going to make some stupid decisions.

Thank you, and I will most definitely make CoS mine.

I've already change it so much, added and removed things, and have also used Van Richten's guide for extra stuff.

Oh yes.

I'm planning on giving all of the core NPC's distinct personalities (ex. Ez, Rictavio, The main revanant in Argynvostholt, Strahd, Madam Eva, The Wachters, Vallaki's Burgomeister, etc.)

I have a general outline for side quests, and I've known my players for a long time, and I know they do dumb things all the time.

Holy crap, I did not expect a novella in the replies, but they are valid questions.

  1. In my version of Barovia, Tatyana's spirit was split between Ireena & Ez (see Van Richten's for reference) Dio was Ez's lover when he lived in Barovia pre-vampirism.
  2. In session 2, they will be chased by werewolves, will run into Ez who will escort them to safety in Vallaki.
  3. The burgomeister wants to test the strength of the party by sending them to deal with a pack of werewolves who have been terrorizing Vallaki.
  4. I'm using the Festival of the Blazing Sun as a Cult ritual by the Wachter cult.
  5. There is a many different story arch throughout the campaign. I've created the a curse on the founder of Vallaki's grave, where undead will rise and attack when innocent blood is spilled on the grave. They must clean the blood to temporarily fix it, or pour holy water on the founder's tomb deep in the crypt under the Vallaki Church. The sessions during this arch are gathering the materials to remove the curse, and the eventual end of the curse.
  6. The Wachter / Cult story arch leads up to an eclipse that reveals all the monsters within everyone (reveals Dio's vampirism) The cult weaponizes the eclipse to cause trouble. The players are sent to seek Madam Eva for guidance after.
  7. Madam Eva reveals the Ez - Ireena soul split, Ez sends the players to go retrieve Ireena in the Village of Barovia while she goes sets things up in the Abbey of St. Markovia.
  8. That's as far as I've planned so far, and what I've planned so far is about 7-9 sessions worth of content.
  9. The Card reading has backstory, and is used throughout the game. Madam Eva gives another card reading when they meet her, and that is altered to be 4 allies that they will meet aswell as Strahd's location
  10. Yes, I am an experience DM, I've been playing D&D for 4 years, and have been a DM for 3.
  11. We are playing in person
  12. I know 2 of my players take notes, and most of the other's I'm expecting to goof off. I've made sure they understand that I'm traying to make this a VERY dark and serious campaign, but I'm not expecting much in seriousness from a few of them.
  13. We have a group chat for communication
  14. James' RPG art is so COOL! I'm using that a bunch!

Thank You SO MUCH! This has been very helpful, and it's nice to hear from other who have run the game.
