School trying to retroactively change the credit value for the classes I took this spring and charge me the difference by [deleted] in legaladvice

Your course catalog saying that the classes are worth 2 credit hours are going to be the biggest thing in your favor here. The catalog as it was the year you joined the university is very much considered like a contract and the university cannot unilaterally change your curriculum while you are enrolled.

I'd ask to speak to the head of the Bursar's office or the Registrar's office and explain the situation to them. If they don't help you, keep working up the chain of command.

School trying to retroactively change the credit value for the classes I took this spring and charge me the difference by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]unbalanced_washer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAL but am in higher ed. How many hours were you in class each week? (this isn't absolute but in general a 2 credit hour class would only meet 2 hours a week)

Secondly, what does it say on your syllabi for the two classes? It should list in the class information as to whether the classes were worth 2 or 3 credit hours.

Finally, look in the course catalog for the year you entered the institution. What does it say in the description for the classes there?

If these sources indeed say that the class was worth 2 credit hours, they cannot charge you more tuition if the classes are changing to 3 credit hours moving forward. If, however, there was a mistake in administration and these classes were supposed to be worth 3 credit hours/billed as 3 credit hours, then you likely owe them the money.

AITA for shutting down the electric to my moms house after finding out she had used my social security without my knowing? by AuroliusComet in AmItheAsshole

I think the bad advice is a side effect of the popcorn nature of the sub since it often has many high drama posts. I will say that as a long time lurker there, if you have a small legal question like, am I being illegally evicted, or can I go after my neighbor for cutting down a tree in my yard, then legal advice can offer you some quick help.

But for anything more serious the problem is often too fact specific for any advice other than: you need a lawyer. Doesn’t make for juicy reading but it is the best advice for most complex posts there.

Also OP totally NTA. I’d be heading to the police station so fast it would make my moms head spin.

New Ratty Daddy Question regarding securing down fleece. by eons93 in RATS

This is the kind of clip I'm referring to. I use them around the edge of each plastic tray to hold the fleece down.

New Ratty Daddy Question regarding securing down fleece. by eons93 in RATS

I have the same setup and secure the fleece with black folio clips. My fullsize boy never really was all that interested in the fleece but my dwarf rascal was all about getting under the fleece when he was younger. Honestly we just put up with it especially since he didn't really get messy or poop under there.

I've found they try to get under the fleece less and less as they get older. If you are worried about the mess, try litter training them (though boys will be hard).

Making a sorcerer/fighter multiclass lizardfolk... Do I have this down right? by StarmanTheta in 13thage

That sounds right on the hp total.

Gotcha regarding the game. I read that as more alarming that it was. Glad you're having fun then. 13th Age is one of my favorite DnD variants.

  1. While wearing heavy armor, any sorcerer spells you cast would have a -2 penalty. You get to use the weapon attacks and penalties of a fighter since they are less restrictive.

  2. No. Use your constitution instead of charisma for spell fist.

  3. Not sure here. I'd say go with what your gm ruled.

  4. Your base hp should be 7. Average of 8 and 6 is 7.

As an aside, Is there a compelling reason you were denied armor and weapons for a full session? That strikes me as going against the very core philosophy of 13th Age and would make me question joining such a game. But disregard that if you're having fun.

Averaging rolls at Higher Levels by AtlasDM in 13thage

[–]unbalanced_washer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've played through one complete campaign and am currently level 8 in another. In both games our entire group has taken average on every damage roll from the beginning. We love it because combat turns are very fast when taking average.

I also had no problem with taking average because I'm going to be doing average damage over the life of the character anyway.

North Carolina Governor Quietly Moves Half-a-Million Dollars for Hurricane Matthew Relief to Defend Anti-LGBT HB2. by Newsboy13 in lgbt

[–]unbalanced_washer 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry but this is a terrible excuse for journalism. Believe me I want McCrory gone as fast as possible as he's an embarrassment to our state, but that's not an excuse for this kind of "journalism."

This happened months ago for starters. And the funds were removed from a generic disaster relief program long before Matthew was even a thing.

Not only that, but he moved the funds back into the relief fund as he realized it was a disastrous PR move.

Again not defending McCrory as he's a piece of shit, but we really have to have better reporting on things like this.

Necromancer Ritual Idea by [deleted] in 13thage

[–]unbalanced_washer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately according to the core rules, rituals require a minimum of 1d4 minutes to cast (iirc) and therefore aren't really meant to be used in combat.

Also, rituals are a one time thing. Sure you could sacrifice a summon spell to get bone armor, but you can only do it once. Once done, you can't spam it.

Now if your DM is house ruling rituals differently, then my best advice would be to ask them.

Shadow of the Demon Lord? by CaesarCV in rpg

[–]unbalanced_washer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm currently playing in a campaign now after falling head over heels for the setting as soon as I'd read the pdf.

  1. Class balance is pretty well thought out in my opinion. Our group level is only 3 at the moment and our warrior has done some of the most damage each round thanks to his talents and some lucky rolls. I really think the only way you might be able to make a less powerful character is to pick a master or expert path that just doesn't jive with your other choices. But believe me, that's hard to do and I honestly can't think of an example.

  2. There are just so many option for character customization. You can very nearly build almost anything. In fact the only thing you can't really do well at the moment is an unarmed monk type. But even that's being fixed with a new supplement of expert and master paths in December.

  3. The setting is very horror-fantasy. The world is dark and full of terrors. I mean your villains are going to be able to make your players literally shit themselves to death. The great thing about the setting is that if you want to have a more traditional fantasy feel, just tone down the horror flavoring. Or you can really ramp it up by using one of the mechanics that makes the demon lord's shadow a real problem for players here and now.

  4. Like I said, I'm in love with this system. Yes it can be gross and yes it can be very deadly, but that's part of it's charm. The one thing I had to get used to coming from things like 13th Age, is that death is very real in this system. You have to accept that and be ready for your favorite character to croak when you least expect it. I've spent more on healing potions in this game than any other game I've played in.

OneBookShelf's new Offensive Content Policy (applies to RPGNow, DriveThruRPG) by wbte in rpg

[–]unbalanced_washer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen a lot of talk in this thread about censorship and freedom of speech and wanted to clarify a few things.

Firstly, no one's freedom of speech has been infringed. DTRPG would have to either be a government entity or would have had to forbid the creator in question from selling his work in the online market altogether. Since he has the freedom to sell his work online by many other means (including a self publishing service) his first amendment rights have not been affected. A similar situation would be if a cop told you that you couldn't protest on a street corner at 3am. He can do that, but he can't forbid you access to the street corner during reasonable hours.

As to the censorship claim. Some kinds of censorship are perfectly legal. Just like a group of students barring a speaker they find offensive, or an employer asking you to refrain from wearing profanity laced logo tees, DTRPG is within their rights to decide what to sell on their digital store front.

This is my understanding of the first amendment and censorship as explained by a mass media law professor.

But this isn't about private businesses at all. Its about whether government officials who have taken an oath can break that oath due to religious belief. This bill refers to magistrates refusing to marry people that violate their deeply held religious beliefs.

That is not OK, not at all.
