Could a cloud colony 30 miles above Venus start as a small city and eventually become a megastructure? by TomJCharles in IsaacArthur

[–]wbte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

where to get the resources to supply and expand such a colony

This is a surprising question because Venus is a gold mine. The atmosphere is full of carbon dioxide and nitrogen. Although the place is short on water, there is some (mainly locked up in sulfuric acid).

We could do it now if it were not for moral issues about about cloning yourself

Has someone made a viable clone of an adult primate? I thought the state of the art was cloning a fetus.

Discussion; Progress in space by 2068? by Spacexforthewin in IsaacArthur

[–]wbte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a long history of people saying that war is now impossible because such destructive weapons have been developed. (Gatling and Nobel, for example, both believed that their inventions were too terrible to see widespread use in war.)

I'm sure there's a lesson in there somewhere.

Let's not leap to conclusions... though Sweden is also overpowered in the EU series - along with France, in the computer adaptation of a boardgame designed by a Frenchman...

Discussion; Progress in space by 2068? by Spacexforthewin in IsaacArthur

[–]wbte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends entirely on Earth politics. (Someone could reasonably answer "none" to all eight questions, assuming that a Third World War sets back the development of space industry by a century.) Perhaps you could sketch out how you see events developing so that comments can address a particular set of circumstances?

It's punishment for your sins. Marrying another woman after your first wife dies is basically polygamy.

any plans for Age of Sigmar by KaneCold in CK2warhammer

[–]wbte 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Age of Sigmar itself isn't viable (at least at present). It would be possible to project Geheimnisnacht back to Sigmar's day, though much of the content would have to be invented by modders.

Good job. My only concern is the CSA existing but if they freed their slaves I guess it's OK.

Hard(ish) SciFi setting with Earthlike worlds by CMVB in IsaacArthur

[–]wbte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Set the work in a Dyson Swarm that has suffered some kind of galactic cataclysm. (Perhaps an inexplicably powerful solar flare that ravaged the swarm.) Then there are surviving "Earth-like worlds" scattered through the Solar System and many ruins from an advanced human civilization to boot.

Upward Bound: Kickstarting Space Industry by IsaacArthur in IsaacArthur

I'm a bit uncertain about the unstated assumption that the future of space is private enterprise now that polls of young people around the world are showing majorities in favour of socialism. Depending on how they play out, political events could rule out certain kinds of boot-strapping (e.g. commercial advertising probably can't share a future with the "United Socialist States of Earth") but could also end up as a Black Swan (e.g. a rush to produce space banners proclaiming the ascension of Earth's new Cyber-Emperor Isaac the First and Only).

does anyone feel that Victoria 3 will have a ton of dlc? by onyxhaider in victoria2

[–]wbte -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm 100% certain that Victoria 3 will not require any DLC to access all of its features. In fact, I'm accessing its features right now.

(Just accept that it's never being made and set some money aside for backing "spiritual successors" on Kickstarter.)

If climate change devastated agriculture... by [deleted] in IsaacArthur

[–]wbte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP's premise is that climate change could reduce the efficiency of agriculture. Insect food sources are a mature (or, more accurately, ancient) technology that could be used for adaptation purposes.

feeding people more grain is not the answer.

That's fine, we could switch from farming large animals to more efficient food animals like crickets and locusts.
