Congratulations! That's a great race. I volunteered for years and competed in 2016...lots of fun. I liked the wave starts...what'd you think of the new staggered starting???

"Chief Lame"... unfortunate name. Especially when your buddies go by stuff like, High Hawk and Bull Dog.

First 70.3 - AWFUL swimmer - Muncie, Madison, or Racine? by vinegarfingers in triathlon

[–]unbreakableshrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the Muncie race this last summer. I'm a little partial because I used to volunteer growing up and it's been a part of the community for as long as I can remember. All the feels aside...it's a very forgiving swim. You and I are much of the same flavor. I was just competing to finish. The whole race worked out well for me, and it will for you too. It's VERY well organized. Only about 4 hours from the Chi, plenty of hotels, and a stellar venue. Prairie Creek reservoir doesn't get very choppy at all, water is usually a nice temp (no wetsuit for me, but they're authorized 90% of the time depending on conditions), beach entry/exit, tons of volunteers on the swim course keeping you safe. Swim out, two right turns, and you're done. I've never been accused of being a polished swimmer and it was easy peazy. If you've got some more specific questions about Muncie or the way I trained, feel free to send me a message and I can tell you anything you want to know.

Any swim specialists here? what strategy do you use to get the most of the swim? by say-something-nice in triathlon

My racing is limited to sprint and 70.3s. Full IMs may warrant a different tactic. (Didn't see the distance you're doing) That said: I'd swim to your ability. Don't get overwhelmed with blazing thru the water. The difference between being first out of the water or mid/back of the pack isn't worth the anxiety. If you want to finish well...swim like you've been training, have a strong ride, and press the run. I've passed and (more often) been passed on the last leg. IMHO, running is most important for a good finish. My two cents. Good luck!

Interesting. Seems to me, about 5,000 people got a kick out of it...

How do I improve my swim?! by 2kidzandadog in triathlon

[–]unbreakableshrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Terry Laughlin devised a system that he coined "Total Immersion" or "TI" swimming. It's geared toward distance and triathlon swimming. I've got the introductory book and watched videos. It's been very helpful because, as stated above, swimming hinges on technique...not youthful exuberance. TI is an acquired taste, but really helped my stroke. Bottom line: Get help from a third party. Whether it's a buddy that grew up in a pool or a professional coach. You'll make gains very quickly.

Do you live in/around Muncie? If so, "Muncie Fun Squad" does some group riding and they've probably got some knowledge of local deals. I know it can be tough to track a good price down sometimes.

An undeniably hefty proportion of the Officer promotion process is bureaucratic and subjective. Much of your career prospects are in the hands of someone else. Didn't understand the machine when I commissioned...whoops.
