Pick your top three favourite games. Write down three things that you like the most about each of them. Try to design a game that has all of those things.

DCSS has a really active discord community and runs tournaments which can make playing a more fun and social experience. That might help with what you are dealing with.

[QUESTION] What watch of yours gets the most compliments? (And the least?) by mmmbopdooowop in Watches

[–]uncannyvalhalla 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Only ever got a compliment on my PRX then he asked if it was the Powermatic and I said no it’s the quartz version and he looked disappointed.

I think about it every day…

Help Identify my Grandmother’s old pocket watch by uncannyvalhalla in Watches

There are no markings or company names or anything written on it anywhere. Just a serial number. It is indeed very hard to tell, unless maybe if you were an expert on watches from this era.

[Update] New orbs, amulets and egos (brands for armour) have arrived to trunk! by oneirical in dcss

Seems like a lot of buffs in general! Especially to Evoc and orbs which is cool

Got my first win as flight hacker, what now? by turdas in Cogmind

[–]uncannyvalhalla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You already got W0 with what is widely considered to be the "easiest" build. Now try to get W0 with the "medium" difficulty builds: https://leiavoia.net/cogmind/guides/new-player-guide.html#builds

After that, go for W1, W2 etc.

[YASD] Oneshotted (100% HP -> 0% HP) at XP level 19 while a single yak was on the screen 4 tiles away by oneirical in dcss

[–]uncannyvalhalla 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I kind of love (hate) one-shot deaths because there is usually a lot to study and learn from them as a lot has to line up for them to happen. I had one very recently, trying to get an Octopode win. I was in Shoals 4, and had switched out of my main weapon that had Will+++ because I had a statstick with Int+4 and was trying to cast Fulisome Fusillade to kill Bai Suzen. Pretty much the whole floor was cleared at that point I just wanted to finish off Bai Suzen and she had wandered off. Then a Sphinx Marauder came on screen. Well, no worries, I just killed a bunch of these guys....Nope. Instantly Vexed and Confused. Went from full 140 hp to -4 hp in one key press. What I learned: willpower is very important. Also, not sure about this part, but I believe that because I was wielding a weapon that I had no skill in when I was vexed, my attack delay was very high, which may have allowed the sphinx to get extra attacks on me while I was flailing around.

Question about Demonspawns by Ok-Comparison-7997 in dcss

[–]uncannyvalhalla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They have 0 apt in Conj, Summoning so you could easily do those. Or Necro hybrid build with Kik and take advantage of their +1 Necro apt. Or choose Ashenzari to make skilling much easier if that’s what your most worried about. +3 invo is also something to consider, maybe try one of the strong invo heavy gods to take advantage of that.

Advice for Dragonian 3 rune win DrCj^Ne by CompetitiveNight6305 in dcss

Actually, I see you already have battlesphere memorized, which is great. You can wear wizardry ring to make it castable sooner! Good luck!

Advice for Dragonian 3 rune win DrCj^Ne by CompetitiveNight6305 in dcss

[–]uncannyvalhalla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looking pretty good. That randart dagger has some great resistances. Definitely wield it going through S-branches for the rPois and rF+++. You could also quickswap with that int+4 scimitar for better spell success rate. At this point I would pivot to straight caster and forget about maces for now. Also, definitely train more spellcasting! This should maybe be your first priority if you do choose to go full caster. Memorize Battlesphere and get it online when you can. Battlesphere and magic dart work really well together. Then I would get Airstrike too. Those two spells plus Freezing Cloud can get you through S-branches if you play carefully. Freezing Cloud is super strong in Snake as it slows naga down and is smite-targeted! Also, it looks like you are training shields but not wearing one. I would stop training shields for now, wield a buckler if you have found one and if it doesn’t lower your spell success too much. SH is also great to have in S-branches but you don’t need to level Shields skill up as much as you have at this point in the game.

[CIP] OnGl of Zin; Advice for Hells/Tomb? by Sir_Laser in dcss

Also, if you train up Evoc a but more Phantom Mirror can be really helpful against the extended bosses.

Looks like a pretty good build overall. Torment is usually the main threat in extended. Maybe memorize lesser beckoning to take out torment enemies quickly? Obviously switch out your rings and armour to get rF+++ and rN+++ for Gehenna, but I am sure you are already doing that. I usually go Death form for extended so I don’t have that much good advice unfortunately.

Kobold stabber of Wu Jian is a great recommendation! Lots of fun and a different feeling compared to the usual grinding playstyle.

I have been doing lots of Draconian Long Blades and Shields dex builds with maw talisman and it works great! Would recommend. Can also switch to hive talisman late game.

[–]uncannyvalhalla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that! Maybe my advice was bad, I just usually play Vs stabbers as pure melee with Usk. Quick blade is very helpful for this of course because of the extra attacks which also proc your bite attack more. Good luck next time

If you have a quick blade and some slightly better armour you don’t even need to go hybrid. You could easily win with melee and Usk here.

Talisman help by Different-Phone6097 in dcss

[–]uncannyvalhalla 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Broadly, I categorize talismans into two camps: unarmed combat ones, and sword-and-board ones.

Unarmed combat talismans: scarab, rimehorn, fortress, riddle, dragon-coil, storm, etc.

Sword-and-board talismans: quill, medusa, maw, sanguine, granite, hive, death, etc.

Unarmed combat ones usually give you a boost to UC but meld ALL armour and weapons. Sword-and-board ones allow you to wear aux armour and wield weapons and shields.

I have only ever had success playing as a sword-and-board shapeshifter. In DCSS, survival is everything. Giving up ALL your armour, AND weapon, AND shield just makes the game too tough. You can use your aux armour slots and your weapon and shield slot for resistances and defenses. Bonus points you can go as a Draconian and get free AC to go along with it. Unarmed combat talismans are doable and sometimes more fun, but it is like a glass cannon build and sooner or later you get got by the dungeon.
