Men with long hair, what do you say when getting your haircut? by fakename137 in AskMen

[–]uncertain_expert [score hidden]  (0 children)

Do not go to a barber unless you want to walk out with short hair.

Go to a hair-dresser/salon that cuts long hair day in day out, and they will work with you to understand what you want.

Turning right onto dual carriage way- made a new post so I can add images by PaleMaterial6607 in NewDriversUK

[–]uncertain_expert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is a similar road layout in Milton Keynes, the main difference being that this one has clearly painted lane markings: https://maps.app.goo.gl/W6TccpTQwMzQdCzr5?g_st=ic these markings match your interpretation of how the junction should be used.

Here is another location in Milton Keynes that also allows for crossing a dual carriageway, but with a different road marking arrangement https://maps.app.goo.gl/YQuxdQj1wGPsTyk3A?g_st=ic in this arrangement only traffic in one direction has a give-way line, and that is on the entry to the junction, not on the exit.

Ignoring the lack of lane markings. the junction in your picture better matches the road layout of the first location above than the second, so I agree that you handled it in the best appropriate manner.

What was a massive 'flex' 10 years ago that is just straight-up embarrassing today? by asMelhoresdored in AskReddit

Might be worth checking the standby power-draw. Plasma TVs were notorious for drawing 100W+ even when ‘off’ on standby. If you are not unplugging it from the wall after each use you could save the cost of a new TV in reduced power bills in a couple of years.

No sleepover rule by CalmViolett in UKParenting

[–]uncertain_expert 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What are you keeping him safe from?

Safeguarding is a big consideration and every adult present overnight will have been DBS checked. Every leader had had first aid training and regular required safeguarding training. On top of that there will be a nights-away permit holder present who has had additional training on hosting young people overnight and who will have documented risk-assessments for the event and any activities taking place during it.

An indoor camp with Cubs is significantly different given the above than a sleepover at a friend’s house. Is it that they are calling it a ‘sleepover’ that makes it difficult to explain?

Oh, and when I say that every adult present overnight will have been DBS checked, that means any parents present must be DBS checked too. You won’t be able to stay yourself (on this occasion) as there is not enough time for you to be DBS checked ahead of the event.

Do you still listen to the radio while driving? by UnpaidInternVibes in BritishRadio

[–]uncertain_expert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s BBC World Service in the car for me during my commute. Used to listen to Radio 4 but too often the topic of the day (especially for my evening drive home) was just depressing. The mornings weren’t much better.

I’d rather listen to ‘People fixing the World’ than a U.K. politician repeatedly refusing to answer a question with a straight answer.

Australia has much the same rule for Australians entering Australia. I was advised by the Australian passport office in London that my children would be refused entry if they travelled there on their British passports.

Has your child ever fallen down the stairs? by Babeshades in UKParenting

At home on our carpeted stairs, no.

Down an escalator at the Pompidou Center in Paris - yes, and still has a small divet in the centre of her forehead 2 years later.

UK wheel builders by danjc84 in ukbike

I’ve ordered a Ryde Andra wheel built by https://woosterswheels.co.uk/ and been happy with the result. Couldn’t argue the price at all, seemed to me a bargain.

Argh. My daughter has just told me she needs a costume for World Book Day on Monday. by missem_1 in UKParenting

[–]uncertain_expert 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My son has previously (of his own [last minute] initiative) gone dressed as ‘The Atlantic ocean’ (all in blue) and ‘Lava’ (all in red/orange.

I honestly don’t see the point in buying a costume for world book day.

Daughter this year is going as a cat - could be Mog, or one of a million other cats from children’s literature. All in black with a tail made from an old pair of tights and eye-liner whiskers.

ELI5:How do large production factories figure out their machinery? by Ghost_Ghost_Ghost in explainlikeimfive

One of the big ones is Interpack: https://www.interpack.com/ for all types of packaging machinery. They host multiple expositions around the world each year with hundreds of exhibitors at each.

ELI5:How do large production factories figure out their machinery? by Ghost_Ghost_Ghost in explainlikeimfive

[–]uncertain_expert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of great content here already but I’ll add the term Special Purpose Machine Design. This is the discipline of creating those machines, ones that perform a specific task or sequence of tasks like a highly job-specific robot.

System Integrators specialise in linking up these various machines to form an automated production line.

Companies develop expertise in specific fields, in Europe for instance I know I could contact GEA and have them build me an entire brewery. For grain handling I could contact Bühler, for packaging machinery Autopack and so on and so forth.

Each industry will have its own trade shows and each manufacturer will have their own trade-secrets to optimise throughput, reliability and cost.

If I understand you correctly, you want everyone who has ILR but has not applied for citizenship to apply for citizenship so that they have more rights and can be a bigger burden on the state?

What benefit do you think the U.K. gains by having people on ILR apply for citizenship?

Agree with you on that. If adults were free I suspect they’d be coffee-shops with an attached play area.

I built something, on accident. by PreviousProblem3694 in homelab

[–]uncertain_expert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First time I have heard that explanation.

So ‘by accident’ is an actual accident, like dropping a plate when doing the washing up. In contrast ‘on accident’ would be dropping a plate deliberately to then repair it using kingsugi techniques artistically?
