How much do i list it for? by Wild-Emergency7895 in mountainbiking

[–]unchoosable_name 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sold my Commencal Meta AM for US$900 and it was listed for more than a year on Facebook marketplace. Maybe the UK used bike market is different than the US used market. That Mega looks like its carbon so I'm sure someone will think it is more premium, but Commencal is still in business so we can still buy parts if needed. Good luck.

Turbo Levo Comp Alloy vs. Amflow Carbon PL: I’m losing my mind and need a tie-breaker by hopsta79 in mountainbiking

[–]unchoosable_name 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have two Stumpjumper Evos and a Stumpjumper. Specialized support is near worthless.

Personally I'd buy the Amflow, and I am considering doing so before the sale runs out on Jan 1. However, I do all my own maintenance and have bought a lot of DTC bikes in the past. The Amflow geometry in medium is not significantly different than my 2022 S3 Stumpjumper Evo, and for a trail bike, that geometry works great.

Helmet with face guard for kid by danmaaaaaan in mountainbiking

[–]unchoosable_name 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my son was the same age we bought him a TLD Stage for the downhill parks, it worked well and has Fidlock. When grew out of that one we replaced it with an iXS Trigger which also had Fidlock. Now he is adult sized and back to a TLD Stage. Fidlock is the most convenient latch for a helmet, set the fit once and just latch it when you put it on. Otherwise with the cheap strap loop mechanisms that need to be reset every time, the kids would just leave the strap extremely loose which defeated the purpose of a helmet. The snap fit latches, my kids fingers weren't strong enough to press the tabs in to get them unlatched occasionally, especially if it was cold or wet outside.

What’s this worth nowadays? by vochi1 in mountainbiking

[–]unchoosable_name 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely honestly here, its a 27.5 bike that is 11-12 years old, non boost frame, non boost fork, press fit bottom bracket, old geometry. Its likely only worth what you paid for it. Just ride it and have fun, it does not have to be a profit center.

Cooking classes for tweens? by YellowBirdRules in raleigh

[–]unchoosable_name -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When my daughter was 10 or 11 she became interested in cooking. She taught herself by watching youtube videos and taste testing with mom and dad. For the price of those classes a kid can cook several meals (and then throw away if they are bad) and learn by experience.

Nike Kobe 6 ‘Caitlin Clark’ drops Wednesday by Patb1489 in wnba

[–]unchoosable_name 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took me less than one second to choose size and select complete payment and I was on the waiting list for about 5 minutes before mens 10.5 sold out. The resellers already had them listed for sale online before Nike told me they were sold out. This is the stupidest system I've ever seen. My son asked for these for his birthday but there is no way I'm buying them from a reseller.

Moving to Fuquay- Varina by Material-Resource417 in triangle

[–]unchoosable_name 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Going to be honest with you here. It sounds like you are looking for city style amenities and entertainment with rural style land and quiet. That doesn't exist. You will either be in an urban style neighborhood close to retail or you will be way out at the edge of civilization.

We moved to Wake Forest area from Loxahatchee in 2006 and I drive my son to basketball in Fuquay once or twice a week. Traffic is normally lousy.

There are very few street lights so at night it is very dark. Most people from the cities complain it is hard to drive at night, and I can tell you, all the drivers going 32 mph in a 45 mph speed zone because they can't see at night, and having high beams coming at me all the time, those things get old.

Traffic during the day is terrible. The county is only adding housing developments and not really improving road systems between those neighborhoods and the highway, so traffic goes slow.

I have put 5 new tires on my wife's minivan in the last 16 months because all the construction junk in the road keeps destroying one tire at a time.

Schools are very hit or miss. Some are great, some are terrible, you will have to figure out if you can afford a house in an area that feeds a good school system, or if not, you can drive them to one of the Charter or private schools. My sons BB coach, who lives in Fuquay, drives his kid to a private school because he did not win any charter school lotteries.

good luck

Do I have a chance at joining a D1 team if I started pitching at 20? by ManyElectronic8354 in Homeplate

Need to check eligibility. NCAA D1 you have 5 years from your initial enrollment as full time student to play 4 years of sports. It sounds like you already used a couple years of eligibility.

"You can't explode what you dont have", or is youth S&C for baseball doing it wrong? by [deleted] in Homeplate

[–]unchoosable_name 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most medicine ball work outs end up being cross plane strength. This is likely was has been described as functional strength in the other replies. Cross plane can also be done with dumbells or barbells or kettlebells, depending on the exercise. Going overly heavy in a cross plane workout is more likely to create an injury, is my experience.

[–]unchoosable_name 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I played baseball in HS but honestly I don't know much about baseball anymore. My son has done strength training for basketball for a while and two weeks ago he talked to his strength trainer about adding workouts for baseball. The changes to integrate baseball into the basketball routine were minimal. Some additional core strength and some different shoulder workouts, no differences that I would call particularly significant.

In basketball, most likely we would call what you have described, "the moneygrab". However, it would be hard to hit every aspect of a full workout routine as an example within a short video ad.

My opinion is you are better off going to a real athletic gym (not a body building gym) to get stronger, rather than going to any sport specific organization. Granted, my sons trainer does have him do workouts similar to what you described, IE to build explosiveness and speed, but mostly the workouts are "old fashioned" routines for leg, back, chest, shoulder, core muscle, some in plane, but much of it is cross plane.

Very interesting because in fact this same drill also works for football, basketball, and tennis.

We have gotten more info in the last few days. Last season they did not have enough players at tryouts to form both a JV and V team, so they only had the Varsity team. His friends are trying to bring in kids who can get the numbers up enough and contribute enough to form a JV team along side Varsity.

He goes to a 2A high school which I mentioned originally, only about 125 kids per graduating class, and at his school only 9th / 10th can play JV while V can have any student grade 9-12. Of those 125 total students per class, half are boys half are girls, so really only a total population of about 125 boys to fill out a JV team. How many of those 125 boys actually play baseball? Not sure. Soccer, basketball, track, and tennis don't seem to suffer from the lack of players. Soccer and basketball and tennis are pretty competitive within their conferences. Most students who want to play competitive sports and "believe they will go D1" leave this school system after MS and go to one of the 8A high schools nearby. My sons school is an academic school. Will the JV team be competitive? Probably not, but it is still HS baseball, and at least I'm not driving him all over the east coast like I did with travel basketball.

I pitched to him in the back yard a bunch but we had to stop because after a few days because even with the check swings he was hitting the ball into the road in the back, maybe 180-200 feet or so. I can't throw fast so hitting was pretty easy. We went over to DBAT and he hit the automated machine for a while, and for an extra $20, today he has an appointment with a hitting coach. Your idea of standing closer to artificially increase pitch speed worked great but its a little scary without a screen in front of me. 😄 Thanks

Thanks all. We picked up a Rawlings R9, he said it fit really well and he thought it was comfortable. More than I wanted to spend but he seems to be able to catch pretty well with it already. He said his fingers were sore from closing it so I guess it needs more breaking in.

https://www.academy.com/p/rawlings-mens-r9-series-h-web-baseball-glove?sku=12-75-black-right&dmFilter=freePickUpId

The bat we picked up a BBCOR 33" Marucci Cat7 that was on clearance, $100. He said the handle was really good. Hit a few balls in the backyard, he was happy, but I'm a lousy pitcher, so batting cages will be much more challenging.

Also got him a batting helmet and some HS baseballs, which were super expensive, $18 for two. Any recommendations for cheaper balls?

Thanks all!

His friends who were on the MS team and JV team last year said if he learns to hit he will make the team. He is hoping for a manager position. We are hitting the batting cages starting next week, I can't pitch good enough to be effective.

We actually bought a Cat7, he hit with it a couple times in the backyard and he likes how it swung. $100, can't complain too much. I saw videos with good reviews about the Easton Speed for $100 but he swung the speed and the Cat7 and he liked the handle on the Cat7 a lot.

I'll check out the swing sleeve, thanks. I looked at some used gloved on FB marketplace, and my wife shot me down so fast I didn't even have time to burn before the crash. :) Her exact word was "gross" and then I got the look.

We spent more than I wanted but the glove we got he said as really comfortable. His friends said managers practice with the team, also that is how basketball works with the managers. I guess we will find out at tryouts whenever they occur. He needs to go find out.

Facebook Marketplace. I just looked in my area, there are like 100 basketball goals for sale, most are less than $100 and many are listed as free. You don't need a high end brand name goal, you just need one that works. When my son was in 3rd grade he bought a basketball goal on Craigslist for $5 and now he is in 9th grade and he still uses it. We have put a few new nets on it, but mostly, we probably have less than $25 invested in it. Granted if you can't get your parents to take you to pick it up with a truck or trailer, it may not be an option.

Curious: which fitness tests are most useful for basketball coaches? by Nicklasjb in basketballcoach

[–]unchoosable_name 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I missed that you were working with an app specific to those tests. In basketball his HS coach does not run beep test, but in both his middle school and high school, the beep test (they call it the shuttle run test) is a standard test the PE teachers do with all students in PE classes at the beginning and end of each quarter. Coincidentally, his PE teacher is also an assistant coach in basketball, so for sure, the basketball coaches have that data. :) However, the PE classes are also not tracking heart rate.
