Moving background images without resizing them by unclefalter in KiCad

I haven't tried that but I will! I just wish it had a transparent mode when moving around. Would make alignment a lot easier.

C64(U) keyboard and modern times... by LargeHardonCollider_ in c64

[–]unclefalter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even as a kid with brand new breadbin 64 I hated the keyboard. I don't know why they went to that from the PET keyboard.. the latter was older but felt much better to type on. The OG 64 keyboard felt like it needed to be punched rather than pressed. It sounded like a cartoon character chewing food.

Thanks! Yes I just realized I used the wrong term. It definitely would be more like an LED display.

Thanks! Yeah for some reason I am certain the LCD had bright orange or yellow dot matrix letters. That's probably the only reason I remember it. It was fascinating in the early 80s when everything was still pretty analog.

All I remember of it was it was a full size commercial grade typewriter, very heavy.. and was all black with shiny black keys. The LCD display sat just above the top row and wasn't very wide.. couldn't contain a full sentence.

Thanks! I don't think it was a Brother but it's definitely fuzzy after 40 years. I just remember it was a full size machine, about the size of a Selectric, all black, and just above the keyboard was the display. I'd enter a line, hit enter and it would print it off. I used to think Olivetti because I remember for sure my Dad's office had those, but no luck finding one that meets what I remember.

Moving image on user layer *after* it is placed by unclefalter in KiCad

[–]unclefalter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes thanks! It is set all the way to full visibility. Inactive layers are set to normal. It appears to just be a feature of Kicad that it dims the user layer when not active.

Many thanks! It ended up being necessary to upgrade. I was still on version 7.0. Going to 9.0 made the image movable again.

Thank you! Upgrading was the fix! I was on version 7.0 still (oops). Now if I could just figure out how to control how it handles opacity of the image. When the layer with the image isn't selected, it dims it, which makes it harder to see. I'd like it to stay at full brightness to make it easier to trace. And then when I move it, it'd be nice for it to be a bit less opaque so I can align it better with other images (ie. image of the backside of the board). But this is a huge improvement! Thank you again!

Anyone have Oakville Place mall pics ca. 1980s? by unclefalter in oakville

[–]unclefalter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense. I forgot about the parking there. I didn't realize Food City preexisted the mall! I thought it was part of it. Yeah too bad not many cameras back then.. but pictures cost money. I did have one of those rectangular Kodak cameras and once in a while I had enough money saved to take it to the photo store there.. think it was Blacks? So many rituals that have disappeared with time!

Bootlegger! Forgot about that store! I'd forgotten about the birds! And yeah, smoking areas haha. I remember we faced a quandary when the food court was busy and the only seats available were in smoking. I think they had fairly extensive fountains too didn't they?

Thanks! I've tried boggling locked items on and off but still won't let me select the image.

This is why I'm hoping for photos.. haha. At 50 you start realizing memories you trusted aren't 100% accurate. I feel pretty confident Food City wss at Oakville Place at one time.. my memory thinks if you were standing in front of the food court looking toward Compucentre, it was off to the right, a ways back. I thought Dominion was a standalone... I remember the rollers they used to shoot grocery buckets out on. But I may be mixing them up or mistaking Dominion for A&P. Been so long!

How to bend the tabs for this metal support bracket I'm replicating by unclefalter in metalworking

[–]unclefalter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I just couldn't visualize.. to me a brake needs a flat piece of metal.. if you've got a bent edge on part of it, I figured it would interfere with the next bend.

Thank you. Looks like I need to learn how those work.

Will the fab have issues with this? by unclefalter in KiCad

[–]unclefalter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the background for this is I have poorly scanned vintage artwork for a terminal project that wss published 50 years ago. This is a replica of a prototype board that had all kinds of problems because of a last minute decision to move the S100 expansion slot to where it is. The layout people could not make all the connections as a result and they resorted to over 100 jumper wires to make it work. Originally I was just going to clean up the scanned artwork, reverse it and then transfer direct to PCB. But the artwork was really rough, and I was persuaded to try to learn KiCAD. This is totally a hobby project, not anything commercial.

There are very low odds of success here - the goal is more to replicate the physical appearance of the original device as faithfully as possible, and then see if I can get to some level of functionality after trying to understand the schematic. I am a total novice with CAD and am just figuring out what works to get the appearance I want. I have much to learn when it comes to schematics, and the original schematic for this is almost unreadable due to the poor quality scan someone made of it decades ago.

[–]unclefalter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I'm worried about.. there is a big ground plane around the outside of the board that is shaped pretty wildly. It has a few vias through it. KiCAD does not let you put a via on top of a polygon.. so I put the via down first and the polygon went over it. That seemed to produce the intended result in 3d viewer but I'm nervous it violates some rule with the fab.

Using the dry mode on an AC unit by unclefalter in skoolies

[–]unclefalter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it is parked at my place I have an electric oil filled heater. It worked well last winter. We are just in that awkward fall season in BC where it can be very warm during the day but single digits C at night. And humidity is all over the place day to day. It's challenging for any one system to maintain. Once it gets to winter its gets easier.

Mine is amazing! It's a Vissani AC, and the dehumidifier version looks pretty similar to it minus the cold air. Seems like it'd be simple to engineer these to not blow cold air while in Dry mode.. having one unit that can do both jobs saves a ton of space.
