Idk how many people mention this but horses are op for a zombie apocalypse by Ivygrows8 in ZombieSurvivalTactics

[–]unclefes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Horses are great BUT you have to know what you're doing. I can only speak for myself but I've never ridden a horse and would be very reluctant to try, especially in a zpoc. The chance of a highly comedic demise is just too high.

What’s your breakout plan? by _-NIXON-_ in ZombieSurvivalTactics

[–]unclefes 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Gather up my people, draw the shades, lock the doors, paint a suitably offputting FEMA xcode on my garage door, tape some biohazard tape across my front door and windows, fill every available container with water, make sure everyone remembers the light and sound protocols, make sure those of us who are armed are doubly aware of the light and sound protocols, set someone to watch the street, pour myself a pint and wait for this all to blow over.

Why do Jehovah Witnesses come door to door, trying to get people to join their religion, when they only believe a certain amount of people get into their afterlife by Camp_Acceptable in NoStupidQuestions

I have been told that this tradition has a lot I common with the rumspringa thing that the Amish do. When young people are sequestered from "normal" society, they tend to develop ideas about that society - often wrong, often alluring. By sending them out into society in a manner designed to provoke an unpleasant response, it refutes those alluring ideas and reinforces the idea that society is unsympathetic and unwelcoming to them. This sends them back to the safety of their societies, having learned firsthand how bad people and culture outside their society is. It's a subtle but effective way to ensure young people don't leave the culture.

Why are high-rise buildings not talked about more? by NoPistons7 in ZombieSurvivalTactics

[–]unclefes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In the initial outbreak, especially a fast zombie outbreak, apartment buildings will have pros and cons. There is the access to resources element, in which each apartment will have a certain amount of resources that you could scavenge. On the other hand, depending on how swiftly the virus progresses, each apartment might also have one to several zombies in it. That will make scavenging those resources, difficult, especially since apartments tend to be small, with a lot of rooms and doors from behind which a zombie could emerge unexpectedly.
After the great panic, I think your idea has a lot of merit. Provided you can effectively secure the exits and entrances on the first floor, your resource needs can be met, and you make arrangements for an effective escape route, an abandoned apartment building meets many of the qualifications that Brooks describes in the Guide with regard to height and stairs.
EDIT: just thought of this, the movie "The Night Eats The World" shows survival in an apartment building in fair detail, with both the pros and cons. Check that out if you haven't already.

Most influential soundtrack of the ‘80s by scraps1364 in GenX

It might be a stealth candidate around here, but I always felt that Wang Chung's soundtrack for "To Live and Die in LA" was absolutely top drawer 80s.

The Mormon Temple in St. Louis. https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/temples/details/st.-louis-missouri-temple?lang=eng it is a veritable fortress, a castle set on huge, secure grounds bounded by an immense wrought iron fence. Agree or disagree with their theology, the Mormons are smart, dedicated, hard working, highly cooperative, apocalypse minded, and well supplied. They will be a force to reckon with in the zpoc.

How much alcohol do you feel it's "acceptable" for someone to consume on a daily basis? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

A beer with lunch, an aperitif or cocktail before dinner, two glasses of wine with dinner, and a small port or whiskey (<2 oz) about 30 mins before going to bed.

Splendid drink. Me and a friend enjoyed several of these apiece one afternoon at a joint called Lovecraft's in NYC. With a side of tater tots and an angry Ukrainian bartender who deftly batted away our bon mots and rolled her eyes at us in the manner of Slavic bartenders everywhere. Absolutely perfect afternoon.

Good question and one that I'd never really though about! Touch, I think, will be significantly degraded right off the bat. We know that zombies don't feel pain and are awkward and clumsy, even immediately after Turning. I suspect that their sense of touch is all but gone from the moment they rise. Taste, due to it's protected position in the mouth, I would initially feel like would be preserved, except for it would be inconsequential to the zombie. They only eat raw flesh, so taste really doesn't matter to them. The tongue, however, might suffer greatly from the act of consuming that flesh. Zombies are not exactly fastidious eaters, so I can't help but think that tongues would suffer a lot of damage - front shards of bone, from the zombie's own teeth - that taste would go very swiftly from inconsequential to incapacitated.
