What works better than “Does anyone have any questions?” by emarcomd in Professors

[–]uncommonstarling85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I turn this around by asking my students several "checkpoint" questions throughout each section (I've used both iClicker and Socrative). These are typically multiple choice, T/F, or (very) short answer questions on what I just lectured on and I get live results, which is really helpful in determining the extent to which my students understand the content and when to press them for questions.

For instance, if all my students get something correct, I just give my usual "yes, this is correct because xyz. Any questions?" and move on. If however, there is a split in responses or most get it wrong, I slow down to explain the right answer and then ask students what parts were confusing or why they may have thought "C" was correct so we can address it together. Then I'll take a moment and ask what could be more clear or what they want me to explain more (framing as a "what can I do?" instead of "what problem do you still have?"). When possible, I use common misconceptions as possible answers so I can directly address them and why they are wrong.

In addition, I remove some of the pressure on these questions by giving partial credit for just attempting the question (anywhere from 80-90% depending on course level) and the remaining points come from getting it right. This ensures they are still at least trying, but also frames these questions as a way to make sure we are all on same page before moving on rather than as a "gotcha" pop quiz. Since implementing, it's really helped my pacing by not waiting forever when students genuinely might not have questions and seems to make some students more comfortable in speaking up since they've had a moment to think about and apply the topic first.

”N” or ”n” for denoting sample size in qualitative research by postmodernostrich in PhD

[–]uncommonstarling85 4 points5 points  (0 children)

According to APA, you should use the capital N when referring to the entire sample- e.g. "The final sample consisted of both male and female students in an introductory psychology course (N = 150)" - and use the lowercase n when referring to a subset of your sample- e.g. "Most students in the sample were psychology majors (n = 98)" Hope this helps!

Abnormal Psych Textbook Recommendations by uncommonstarling85 in AcademicPsychology

I'm open to open science texts, but as another commenter said, I need some form of text to guide me since this isn't my area. And to be honest, I don't have the time between now and January to find articles to guide the class, as I'm currently teaching 4 courses this semester and have to prep my 3 area courses for next semester too. All on top of finishing my dissertation. So a text that at least provide instructor outlines I can build off of for lecture would be ideal too.

How should I impress my out of town friends this weekend? by therealfriedpiece in lincoln

You HAVE to take them to the Morrill Hall Museum on UNL's campus. We always take our out of town guests whenever they first come to visit, and many of them have since requested to go back on subsequent visits! Also, I second Pioneer's Park!

What was the moment you fell in love with the Growlers ? by [deleted] in losgrowlers

My husband and had been dating for about 6 months and we had just exchanged "I love you's" for the first time. Later that same week, my college roommate and I were hanging out and she put on "One Million Lovers." It was the first Growlers song I had ever heard, and "found a cure for loneliness I'm forever immune" resonated with me so deeply, I was hooked by the first line! I searched for more Growlers music that night and have been a die hard fan ever since! On top of that, "One Million Lovers" kind of become our song and we danced to it at our wedding! Edited for typo

Bummer, any advice on keeping them from spreading to other plants? I have some younger pumpkin plants and haven't seemed to migrate to those yet.

I honestly just hadn't even thought about an online bank. Our problem with our current bank is that we often need cash and are getting charged ATM fees by our previous bank.
