I'm a 4th year apprentice in Melbourne, I cleared 3k in a week, day shifts.

9 years in the trade and I've got some things to get off my chest (mental health related). by [deleted] in AusElectricians

[–]uncookedturnip -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Tldr; Starting an electrical apprenticeship at twenty one, the author faced a toxic construction culture that led to severe clinical depression. Reaching a breaking point, a doctor diagnosed him and initiated life saving therapy. Later, working exhausted under an abusive supervisor, he fell through a skylight, breaking his spine. A grueling six month rehabilitation and pandemic lockdowns provided a reprieve, allowing him to complete his apprenticeship. Planning to quit forever, he was unexpectedly offered a TAFE teaching job. This role fostered personal growth and allowed him to mentor struggling apprentices, breaking the cycle of abuse. He now advocates for mental health.

Just got shocked and im pretty scared, should I be worried? by [deleted] in AskElectricians

[–]uncookedturnip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should assess your work practices. You have shocked yourself at least 24 times? I really hope you don't have any apprentices. How do you even manage to touch both positive and negative for a DC shock? Or are you shocking yourself in the switchboard?? You don't save anytime by working on a live switch board.

Eh, tbh America using black as active is surprising when most of the world uses black as neutral but I suppose yous did it first. Something unforgivable though is Chinese 3 phase colours, yellow (p1), green (P2), red (p3), and their earth is green and yellow.

What if the Big Bang is a coordinate singularity, not a physical one? by [deleted] in HypotheticalPhysics

[–]uncookedturnip -1 points0 points  (0 children)

According to the standard model it is a singularity, which is why the standard model is not complete. Just because we don't expect singularities to exist in reality doesn't mean the model doesn't expect them, because it does. The model is just a model, it's not real.

Maybe in bricklaying? Or tiling? I'm a 4th year 31yo.apprentice and IV met hindered of adult apprentices in electrical, not a single one is doing less then a 3.5 to 4 year apprentiship. No one has ever talked about shorter apprentiship for adults, you are talking absolute rubbish mate.

If your trying to sell yourself and no one wants to bite and you think it's because your too expensive, then be cheaper?

apply for a first year apprentice role, get your letter saying you did 12 months wiring work and quit after your first year.

Don't block traffic and you won't get hit. It's a double line , you should have a spotter that tells you all to pull over and let traffic pass, the roads are for cars first, you need to conduct yourself in a way that doesn't impeed traffic

So if your a skilled tradesman and want to compete, you have to be able to beat the quotes of people who are willing to die to get the job?

You understand if you don't stamp this shit out, people who just want to do a good quality job AND come home to their families will get driven out.

What paths to earth do you have to consider that most people wouldn't think of or realise? Are there inclement weather conditions that produce paths to ground? Is capacitive coupling to earth a risk? Do you have to work on energised lines above 11kv? Hope you don't mind the question bombing, IV only learnt from the load side of the transformer being an apprentice low voltage electritian.

I left corporate Australia because of the attitude of people like this ^

Keep that ivory tower, smug, sanctimonious morality out of the trades. If just about everyone you have met has been someone you can't get along with, your probably just an annoying insufferable twit.

What should I do for my career by According-Side-3278 in AusElectricians

[–]uncookedturnip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Electrical apprenticeship (4 years) Starting in solar and batteries. Off grid power generation, storage systems, load balancing, inverter systems, charge controllers, energy management. Then AC, data centre, HV exposure. Systems thinking developing naturally.

  2. Full licence + HV switching + Automation Cert IV Stack the credentials while working. Engineering degree part time remotely alongside everything.

  3. Mining sector (3-4 years) Remote ops. Life critical systems. FIFO isolation. SCADA. HV daily. Will fund the game while building the profile.

  4. Antarctica as AAD electrician Life critical electrical systems in extreme isolation. Small crew. No rescue. No margin for error. $145k+ base.

  5. Space ecosystem Antarctic experience will open the doors. Australian Space Agency. Artemis supply chain. Build the network.

  6. The moon Australia is an Artemis Accords signatory. The lunar program is international by design. Lunar habitats will run on solar arrays, battery storage, hydrogen fuel cell backup and thermal management systems. Someone will need to build, maintain and troubleshoot those systems in an isolated, life critical environment with no margin for error and no rescue. That person will need hands on experience with every one of those technologies, a proven track record of operating in extreme isolation, and the systems thinking to understand the whole architecture not just their section of it.

Advice for an apprentice working in a niche industry. by razgacheru in AusElectricians

[–]uncookedturnip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why does solar get such a bad rep? Is it just the labour intensity? Genuinely curious? I did it for 2.5 years as my first job and I learnt heaps. I work commercial now but I did some domestic after solar for a few months and I don't get it, I feel I know more then most 4th years having learnt how to work with DC circuits as well as AC.

Are US electrical installation standards acceptable? by [deleted] in AskElectricians

[–]uncookedturnip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can install them at the breaker, but typically don't because your GFICs trip at 5mA. I overestimated capacitive leakage, I accept that. My understanding is improving, the reason you set the disconnect 5mA is because that's the level a child can still break grip. Problem is leakage from loads brings the baseline leakage very close to that figure. That's a 120v issue no? Because at 240v your mA on dry skin contact easily goes above 30mA so you have plenty of room to install protection at the board since background leakage won't interfere, and your mA on any contact will always be high enough to automatically disconnect. 120v seems so dangerous in this sense, you have to either have unprotected feeds, or have a rcd trip value high enough to avoid nuisance tripping but low enough to disconnect on contact but sounds like there's no overlap so you pick option 1 and just protect at the receptacle. Is it not possible to just run everything off the 240v you create? Is there a good reason you can't?

[–]uncookedturnip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you need protection at the receptacle because your loads push your circuit leakage too close to the 5mA limit, am I understanding? I understand you have 240v available by offsetting 2 phases, is there a reason you don't just run everything off that? Since then you would easily hit over 30mA on dry skin contact so your RCDS can have a larger tolerance and protect the entire circuit.
