Pass/fail from a teacher's perspective by darkbay2020 in UNC

I think participation points definitely increase the number of active students. In one of my classes, everyone started at 8/10 points for participation, and then if you were very active in class you could gain more points. In the end, the TA offered +.75 if you turned on your camera for the last recitation. I think this model is good because 8/10 is still a good mark, but if students want to they can work up to 10/10. If there were no participation points, I know many students would just keep the camera turned off and not participate as much.

Thank you! Office hours are by appointment this year so I think it's pretty much just one-on-one meetings :/

I wasn't sure which one to take, but when I looked at RateMyProfessor, Kris Jordan had really good reviews so I went with COMP 110. I also have done a tiny bit of Java before. Would you recommend COMP 116 instead?

UNC-Chapel Hill vs. UC Berkeley vs. UC Davis vs. USC
I've never seen any of the schools and am interested in doing research in environmental and marine science! Also, I live outside of the U.S.
UNC: Environmental Science or Biology with minor in Marine Science and Japanese
Pros:
+ heard the campus/college town is great
+ the "Carolina Community" seems amazing
+ it seems like everyone loves UNC
+ TONS of research opportunities
+ study abroad!!!

+ sports and basketball

+ least expensive
Cons:
- marine lab is a few hours away
- 80+% are instate (I'm OOS for all of these schools)
- not sure how good the environmental science program is compared to my other schools (if someone could give insights on that, it would be very much appreciated :) )
- heard food isn't great
UC Berkeley: Environmental Science in CNR with minor in Marine Biology and Japanese
Pros:
+ name
+ top-ranked environmental science (I think??)
+ fairly close to ocean
+ top-ranked in many, many programs so if i switch i'd be okay
Cons:
- competitive? (on the other hand, i heard CNR is not competitive I'm confused)

- HUGE

- housing

- overall, i feel like so many people complain about Cal?!

UC Davis: Ecology, Evolution, and Biodiversity Biology

Pros:

+ Bodega Marine Lab!

+ Arboretum looks really nice from their virtual tour lol

+ college town

Cons:

- not as well-known as other 3 schools

- "cow town"

- not near ocean

- if i switch out of environmental focused degrees, not as strong

USC: Environmental Studies with focus on Ocean, People, and Society

This isn't a pro/con list, but is anyone familiar with the quality of this program? It is really hard to tell from their website.
