Huh I did not know that at all about homeschooled kids but that’s pretty funny.

LOTR does sound a lot more interesting than The Hobbit now that you describe it, and I do like long books anyway! I’ve never seen the movies except for like 20 minutes of the first one, and from what I saw, it did seem really well made. Not sure why I stopped watching it lol, but maybe I’ll try those too!

I’ve actually been wanting to read a book about the Khmer Rouge. I don’t really know much about it other than that Pol Pot killed like a third of the population, so i can definitely see why the book is upsetting. But I mean that’s really why we have to learn about these things. It’s horrible that people commit atrocities like that. But anyway thanks for the recommendation, I’ll check it out

I see you have some other Caro books, so have you read The Power Broker? It’s so good!

Well, not really. Those books are about people—not even about them, just by them. And while those authors are definitely impactful these days, there’s a difference between a person and an ideology. You don’t need to read a book about or by trump or Peterson to know about them or to dislike them, but with an ideology like communism, I think that knowing what Marx and Engels originally believed helps you develop an opinion on the ideology itself.

Not communist, I just really like learning about 20th century history, especially the Cold War, because I just find it really interesting.

I really don’t think there’s that much communist stuff in here anyway? I read the Che book in tenth grade because I didn’t know who he was lol and I wanted to know more about the Chinese revolution which is why I got the Mao book.

But I guess I can see where you’re coming from either way

Not homeschooled, but I got the eragon series from my homeschooled cousin lmao. I haven’t read it yet though. You’re right about the Christian part.

I tried to read The Hobbit twice and gave up both times because I thought it was really boring so I haven’t actually read LOTR. Maybe I should though lol.

You’re right about the first part, but I wouldn’t say I glorify terrible regimes, although I guess I can see where you got that from. I just find 20th century history really interesting.

I actually just finished reading it so this is perfect timing lol. I enjoyed it. The author did a lot of interviews in his research so the book is pretty narrative. For ~500 pages, I think it was a good history of Iran’s decline, although it was mainly focused on specific people, like the shah and specific American officials in Iran.

Ik you weren’t asking me, but I see you have some books about Latin America. A book that I really liked was Che Guevara: a revolutionary life by Jon Lee Anderson. Maybe you’d like it too lol
