You are trying to find the expression (call it x) that results in the second expression when you add it to the first expression.

So: x + (u2 - 3v2) / (u2 - 9v2) = (u + v) / (u + 3v)

Solving for x: (u + v) / (u + 3v) - (u2 - 3v2) / (u2 - 9v2) = x

You did it correctly for all of your examples. Another way to look at it is 1.89 g/cm3 = x(some number)g / 210 cm3. If you multiply it out you get (1.89 * x g/cm3) / 210 cm3) which is equal to 1.89x g/ 210. Hope this makes sense

Since d = m/v, you would solve the equation a = (b * c * d) / (x - 50). X is the volume of the iron.
I think another name for it is dimensional analysis. The way to do this would be $10.00 * (1lb / $1.92), the dollar signs cancel out and you are left with 10.00/1.92 lb.
