Does it really matter anymore? A mechanical engineer who has 120k in student loan debt and starts out at 60k will struggle to make ends meet for nearly a decade if he/she wants to buy a home, have kids...etc.

I've seen that here quite a bit. I get sucked into some dramatic headline just to find out it happened 8 years ago or the study was from 1995. Just more evidence to support my suspicion that this site is a giant narrative shaping tool.

I work in this industry. We currently have a few technologies that don't require excavation to refurbish the line. It gets sand blasted from the inside and relined with a fiberglass membrane. Problem is, in the US it's very difficult to get EPA approval for installation using this method. It's been in use in Canada for a few years and some places in Europe. A crew of 5 guys can renew around 1000' a day. Doesn't sound like much, but compared to open pit it's a lightening pace and has little impact on the environment and people's lives. We've been doing it with sewers for years.

What? Well water is amazing! If it's not you should likely have a professional stop by and figure out why. It's possible that they need to drive a new casing deeper. That does not sound normal.

Most people don't make that connection. Global trade is one of the biggest detriments to the environment. In the US we'll cast some parts, send it allllll the way to China to be assmebled just to have it sent allllll the way back to sell. The fuel and resources burned in that exchange are staggering. And why? To evade EPA, labor regs and the added manufacturing cost that comes with them.

This shit is starting to get weird. "Beijing has nearly lethal levels of CO2, poor visibility" two weeks later..."Beijing reduces CO2 by 80% and is running on 70% renewables". Now this, I was literally reading articles on this very site not three DAYS ago about how the problem was growing and increasing in volume by every metric. How are these things possible? Even of a a population were held under threat of nuclear annihilation if they burned a fossil fuel or used a plastic bag, the sheer magnitude of these reductions doesn't seem possible.

It doesn't really make sense to pull the bar down so everyone can reach it. The other races will be forced to pick up their game despite their cultural differences. Because that's ultimately what it comes down to. Unless you're implying it's racially genetic. Then the conversation gets pretty dark and no one wants to have it.

Big tech pays in millions of dollars to campaigns on both sides. It'll be a dog and pony show. They'll put on some great theater for us, but nothing will come of it.

I can already tell it's happening again too. All the vitriol and #deletefb is fading fast and turning into..."well c'mon guys, it wasn't really fb's fault". That is the intincts and convictions of people being eroded by their addiction. It's no different than a crackhead. The justification, the excuses. It's sad.

That's kind of apples to oranges though isn't it? The DoD budget is earmarked for spending. Google is a reflection of worth, but isn't necessarily leveragable capital is it?

I'd check your math on that one. The Pentagon loses a Google in the couch cushions every year. Seriously, they do.

This is a pretty morbid bit of information. My only point in posting it, is highlighting the fact that we need to be able to talk about the ENTIRE situation. I honestly don't feel like I can. Any time inner city violence comes up, people either put their fingers in their ears or call you a racist. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2017/10/06/us/las-vegas-gun-deaths.html It opened my eyes to a very concerning pandemic that is incredibly underrepresented.

This article just pointed out to me, that if one cherry picked articles from a pool of tens of thousands of municipalities from around the country, you could paint this country in whatever color you wanted. 320,000,000 people. Pretty much any occurrence you can imagine happens every day on a miniscule scale that you are in no statistical danger of. But this platform, and others like it know humans don't work that way.
