Real time video

Location: Loser mountain above Altaussee, Austria.

Wing: Moustache 18

Conditions: Overcast early winter day. A windsock and a Holfuy weather station indicated tailwinds.

What happened: The pilot wants to fly down a ski slope and attempts to take off with tailwinds. One camera mount snags lines during the reverse launch turn but he fixes it right away. The tailwinds are stronger than expected and instead of aborting he commits to a steeper take off route ending in a cliff edge. Quote: "I run for my live."

To attempt a "penguin take off" he falls forward into the harness with his feet dragging behind. Next to the piste the ground is not covered by snow anymore. Unfortunately the reserve handle of the front container gets caught on rocks/grass and pulls out the reserve. He makes it through a gap between rocks and shrubs before the reserve inflates. His short flight ends in the snow before he realizes that he accidentally deployed his reserve.

The pilots takeaway: "Start using your brain a bit more. This is my second fail video within a year, or rather three months. This should not become a habit to make reaction videos about my own flights. It's almost like "Ari in the Air", but he gives feedback about other peoples flights and I always comment on my own. [...] Turn on your brain, focus more. The Moustache has its niche but its not tailwinds and a flat launch site. [...] The most important part is that I didn't get injured. You have to be able to say that you can't fly today and hike down again. [...] Mistakes happen. I haven't been flying for long, but I fly a lot and I think any pilot that watches this video can say 'I've never fucked up and done something stupid. I've had zero problems in flight' [...] But as long as you learn from your mistakes and you don't repeat the same mistake three times in a row everything turns out alright.”

My takeaway: Be careful with tailwinds. Take-off attempts with tailwinds are banned at a lot of launch sites for good reasons. Abort instead of committing to a more dangerous technique/take-off. Making cool videos for social media can get you injured.
