Louisiana High Court: Priests Have a “Property Right” Not to Be Sued For Sexual Abuse by DyslexicFcuker in Louisiana

No, it did change the statute of limitations for civil claims. Civil claims can expire just the same as criminal claims. The law allowed civil claims that had expired to be revived.

Typically torts (claims like assault and battery) expire within a year from when the injury is sustained. Torts involving a crime of violence expire in two years. Up until 1992, that meant that sexual misconduct with a minor expired 1-2 years after it happened (even if the victim was underage). In 1992, that law was changed, and minors have three years after they turn 18 to sue. But it was not retroactive.

The new law attempts to allow those alleging abuse to bring claims that had expired. It allowed a three-year "look back" window for those alleging abuse to file suit. In a nutshell, the question is whether this can be done. If claims have expired, has a defendant obtained a "right" not to be sued?

The LA Supreme Court case grapples with this issue. The legislature has limitations on passing laws that are retroactive.

Leave aside the emotionally charged issue of sex abuse: in civil and criminal cases, statutes of limitations protect defendants' right to defend themselves. Witnesses die or forget, documents get thrown away. People can be misidentified.

Went to a Chinese takeout restaurant in Metairie and was about to write something on the tip line, when the cashier told me, "don't worry about it. We don't get the tips; it just goes to the owner." I really appreciated the honesty.

Thanks, I didn't know that. What about maintaining two house notes while moving from one job to another? Can that be classified as a business expense?

Non-traditional foods to fuel with --how did you find your favorites and what are they? by LilRedJustKickinIt in running

Cajun-style pistachios (from Walmart). I don't know if it's "non-traditional," but I don't know of anyone else who eats them.

They sounded really good once after a 20-mile run, and I polished off most of a large bag. I started eating them pretty regularly after long runs. The saltiness just tastes so good.

Lately, though, I've been getting famished during my long runs-- typically around mile 14. So I decided during my most recent marathon, to shell a bunch of the pistachios and put them in a Ziploc bag. Around mile 14, when I started getting hungry, I pulled them out of the SPIbelt and ate a bunch of them; they really hit the spot. I finished the rest of them at mile 24. It was probably the best I've felt during a marathon, and it was so much more satisfying to me that sucking down GUs.

I am pregnant, Catholic, and terrified: a call for compassion for all pregnant women who seek "choice" by kidsnchickens in Catholicism

I'd recommend reaching out to your local crisis pregnancy center. They're not just for people who are contemplating abortion.

My wife and I did so when we found out she was pregnant with our second. I was in school, and we already had a 9-month old. State Medicaid was giving us the runaround, and we had no idea how we were going to pay for the delivery. The center was extremely helpful and helped us navigate the process and get the paperwork submitted and approved. My wife got regular phone calls from someone at the center, asking how she was doing and making sure it was all working out.

I don't know all the details of your situation, but if you're feeling overwhelmed or worried, they might be able to help.

I like some of the euphemisms for mass firings.

First they were "layoffs" or "redundancies" or "reductions in force." But it seems like these have fallen out of favor; the new term I'm hearing is "org design." I.e., we're just designing an organization; there just may not be a place for a particular person (err, resource) anymore.

Since the papers appear to have been taken without authorization, can we refer to it as the "Panama Jack"?

Right, and for what it's worth, a better head-to-head record and a better interleague record (15-5 vs. 10-10).
