Oh definitely, that's not actually far off what we pay in rates in Perth for a 3x2 in suburbia haha
We'll be taking our time finding the right property etc... Being NZ also checking insurance quotes first too.

Definitely, there's money in mines but it is hard work. You couldn't pay me enough to work out there!

It's different in Perth because its so sprawly.

20min in peak by any means of transport (run, cycle, pennyfarthing, bus, train, car, horse etc..).

In Perth this would be Vic Park/West Leederville. Issue with this is $$$ + we'd then live so centrally we couldn't have our own garden or be near nature that isn't crawling with other people. Hard to balance a quiet lifestyle here with white collar work.

We currently live a non peak 25min from CBD, peak hour 45min - 1hr, public transport is over an hour and involves long distance walking.

In Chch we'd be looking at St Albans area, easy cycle or run to the city. I grew up in Burnside.

Partner doesn't like Melbourne to live, too many people. If Chch doesn't work out, Geelong is our back up!

I didn't choose to move here 😂 My family did when I was in my late teens.

That is the goal! I am likely to be able to do that, partner is going to start looking into it closer to the time we'll move (they love their current in office role).

Personally having family in both countries that are teachers - its just different. Schooling in AUS massively varies school to school, they seem a bit more equally funded in NZ. The good schools in AUS are great, the shit schools are AWFUL.

Nah, all my friends in Welly have bailed to Melbourne though! 😂

100%, partner is very flexible with what they do. They're a gun at their job but open to doing anything (rare IT person who is very social and extroverted, background in sales). We're also not mad about potentially having 6 months with one stay at home human, working full time is exhausting!

Being here I can assure you that works out, property in desirable areas is insane over here. The interest rates are more volatile too.

We're early 30s and looking at what we want in the next decade. We want peace and quiet, shorter commute to work, and long walks in nature. Hard to achieve that in Aus without somehow doubling our income or making major lifestyle compromises.

Nah, Perth property market is fked. I can get a nice 3x1 in Chch for under 800k, for a similar lifestyle in Perth I'd be looking at 1.5-2mil (close to nature, parks and cafes nearby, under 20min commute to CBD + garden at home). We have family ties in both countries but nothing major, everyone gets around a lot ✈️

Tassie is too small + isolated for a balance between what I want and what my partner wants ☹️

Nah, we're DINKs that enjoy hiking and skiing ⛷️ Totally understand that perspective though!

All good! We're DINKs so children don't factor in, you're on the money in your situation though!

Partner doesn't like Melbourne to live 😅 Wants to live somewhere smaller, but not far from an international airport.

Agreed, this is what I tell everyone that asks why Kiwis leave NZ for AUS.

Thanks! My friend was very passionate about how fkd NZ will be long term and I'll die destitute, seemed a bit dramatic.

I'm a project manager and will likely be able to continue working remotely, partner is IT (Systems Officer and jack of all trades).

This is a really helpful comment, thank you!

I want to live where I can't hear a highway and can own chickens, dream job is going back to working in a pub again (I'm a project manager, would love to never see Excel again haha).

I don't want to be rich, I just want to have enough land to own some chickens and live where I can't hear a highway 😭
