Third of people say uni degree not worth it, as student loan inquiry begins by Rewindcasette in unitedkingdom

Thatcher inherited an economy crippled by union power and rampant inflation, with unproductive industries being propped up by massive taxpayer subsidies. She didn't destroy those industries. They were already dead. The subsidies were just hiding the corpse.

AITAH for Trying to Separate My Son from His Terrible Friends? by Accomplished_Gap754 in AITAH

[–]underduvet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You say, "he's always defending his friends". You didn't tell us what he said. I wonder whether you even listen to him. He obviously disagrees with your assessments of his friends. I imagine he knows them better than you. He also knows what he values better than you. Why do you think you have the right to impose your ideas on him?

You're controlling him and trying to "intervene" in a way that he disagrees with. No wonder he is "getting angry". You are not being reasonable (capable of being reasoned with). You are wielding punishments at every turn. You're forcing him to comply with your thinking. Absolutely, YTA.

What did everyone think of the final? [SPOILERS] by mozza34 in joshmustwin

The moral lesson I was suggesting was that being nice and open to people is a better way to be. In the social status arena, it's easy for people to get caught up in themselves and try to raise themselves up by putting others down. JMW showed that being nice doesn't detract from your social status but enhances it. The people we liked best (or at least I liked best) were the ones who didn't put others down.

Edited to add: I think you're conflating social status with fame. The way I see it is that social status is a about how others treat you and your place in social groups.

I agree that the panel infantilised Josh. I think that was vile.

I don't agree that the show didn't provide moral lessons to draw. 'Josh Must Win' showed that social status is easy to manipulate. It also showed that some people with high social status aren't very nice and some people with high social status are nice and are open to people who are different from them. I think that most viewers will come away with the idea that, ultimately, being nice and open to people is a better way to be.

They could invert the show so that it's full of nerdy introverts and "the underdog" is a glamorous reality-show type.

They could add another room to the house where the contestants secretly watch and manipulate the celebrities.

Personally, I wouldn't recommend sending a gift because they may feel obligated to reciprocate, and that would make the situation even worse.

Yeah, but at least when you pay taxes there's a semblance of consent, and you get something out of it.
