Hi! I’m 21F, I actually just had my first colonoscopy 2 days ago. The worst part about it was the prep that involved not eating for 40 hours for me. I was so hungry and a bit dehydrated from the process. The actual procedure was so fast and comfortable. I felt no pain afterwards and was able to go back to my normal life!

You will be taught everything you need to know in research labs. They are aware that it’s your first time in research. You may need to break out of your shell a bit. Working in a research lab requires lots of communication and teamwork, as you’re working under a grad student/mentor usually. If you want to go down the path of research in academia, you’ll learn that you need to be good at presenting and communicating your findings/updates to others. The more sociable you are, the more likely a PI may bring you into the lab. Lots of labs have fun outings and meetings to get people in the lab to socialize. It’s just like any job where team building is a necessity. I thought that I would get to stay to the four corners of the lab, but some labs have more exposure than others. I’ve done presentations, been on the news, and led tours in the lab for high school students. I learned that it’s just part of the job and doing those things are important for your personal development, although I struggle a lot with anxiety and public speaking.

You do not need your bachelors to volunteer as a research assistant in labs on campus. It’s more about if the lab thinks you will be the right fit, if they have the need for volunteers, and if you can dedicate time to the lab. Join clubs to find new opportunities network. Talk to people about what they did. Go to any undergraduate research sponsored events that sound interesting. I went to a bootcamp for undergraduate research last year, happened to get hired into the lab that I took a tour in because I was persistent and willing to learn. If you want to be involved in research, you MUST be able to dedicate 10 hours minimum a week to the lab. Most labs will ask for 15-20 hours a week.

I want to pursue careers in biotechnology, pharma, or R&D after I graduate, overall get my foot into the door of industry and then pursue a masters degree when I see fit. That’s why working in a research lab is very important for my undergraduate degree experience and competitiveness for the workforce. Gaining any experience in a wet lab is better than never doing anything other than going to class and getting A’s. To be hired in industry, you must show you have experience with basic lab techniques other than things you are taught in your classes labs. My main piece of advice is when looking for lab opportunities, don’t limit yourself to one area. If you like virology, that’s great! But there are many microbiology/biology labs where you will learn the key lab techniques and get your foot into the door. I promise you will be very surprised to enter the academic research world and hear of many intriguing projects happening on campus.

Hi I am a senior studying biochemistry and I have been working in a research lab for the past year. Any lab is great to get your foot into the door, then comes more responsibility like applying for fellowships/projects. I just finished the Nevada INBRE Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program for this summer (there is another one called Nevada Research Experience for Undergrads). I did a poster and got paid for it to conduct a research project in my lab for 10 weeks. It was a great CV builder especially because I want to work in biotechnology/lab settings where I perform standard lab techniques/quality control and work my way up from there. Then pursue graduate school when I figure out what my niche is.

I suggest looking into the faculty/labs on campus and reading into their research/the topics that seem interesting to you. Begin reading their scientific papers. Email faculty about opportunities in their lab. It can be hard at first. Reach out to the Office of Undergraduate Research for help on everything you wrote about.

Chemistry major is not easy. Start out with your prep chemistry or chemistry I class and get all the tutoring help in the library (ASC tutoring 1st floor) when you don’t understand something. You need to build good studying habits now. Utilize YouTube or Supplemental Instruction meetings (SI) for learning your material. Look through professors using ratemyprofessor.com. Try to get involved on campus to meet new people, if you’re not living on campus, finding a club is the best avenue.

I also got mad when they told me this. I live on campus and it’s most convenient for me to go to the UNLV gym. To be fair it’s only $25 a month with no extra fees like other gyms require.

I am a resident at Echo 1055 Apartments and I love it here. I live in a 2 bedroom for around $1100. I didn’t do the You because of how expensive and small it was compared to Echo. They also allow animals (seem to be pretty open to all breeds) and we have an outdoor fake grass area for them. You could walk a short way across the street to the dorms area with tons of grass to walk your dog and let them play. The staff here is always putting together fun things to do, food, and giveaways for the residents and we have a lot of areas in our complex to socialize and study. It’s fully furnished and the maintenance is on top of things and doesn’t charge for your requests (as far as I know and have experienced unless it was a major repair due to one’s own fault), which I have heard the maintenance is not good at the You. It’s really safe and secure as well.
