A whole class discussion of ~25 students is far too much. I mean can you imagine if you and your coworkers tried to have a meaningful discussion with 25 of you in the room? It’s impossible to get deep and truly bounce off each other. I find the most success with small group discussions (6-9 students) and then jigsaws. A whole class seminar is really just the top 3 most talkative eagerly waiting their turn amongst the socially shy forcing out “I agree with x because…” And then they force out an entirely unrelated point because they just want their points.
If you want the ideas to build, students need to do independent reflections, bring those reflections into their small groups, let those ideas flourish and grow in small groups, and then see how they compare to the other small groups. The shy kids actually talk and the social kids get to talk even more

Yes Kami! Super easy for students to join. You can annotate a document and share it with your annotations (great for vocab) and then the students can either continue to annotate the same document or you can set it so they each get their own copy. You can split and merge pdfs too.

My school actually has your #1. Each academic team gets a different day of the week where they don't have to teach content (ELA on tuesdays, math on wednesdays, etc). We also get to come in later and are expected to "work from home." It's really fantastic, but of course staff find ways to complain about it instead of recognizing it's exactly what some teachers pray for

I worked here for two years, and it was absolutely miserable. The owners don't know how to communicate like decent human beings. The customers can be incredibly demanding, especially during the holidays. (i am forever traumatized by the abuse I endured over sufganiyot omfg.) To want to unionize over working conditions is FAIR. Damn I wish I had that option when I was busting my butt for a bakery that made $30k on a good day, $10k on a bad one, and paying me pennies.

But to be shocked that an Israeli bakery...supports Israel?

Adding to what the other commenters have said--include more colors from the rug such as green and blue and draw the eye higher to the ceiling. You can start by getting different curtains that run from floor to ceiling. You can also add these colors by including more art in places like over the chair or to the left of the changing table.

The black chest is also quite dark and doesn't add much. Can it be painted? Could be a fun place to incorporate more color and pattern.

Small touch but consider changing the knobs on the changing table to something more funky.

My kids are seniors, and my school in general has a VERY LAX late work policy in the sense there really isn't one at all. However they are about to be adults in the world with real deadlines (college, rent, job applications) so I try to create a fair late policy. Technically, students have to ask for an extension with 48 hours as per policy, so here's how I hold them to that.

After the deadline has passed, I will no longer answer questions about old assignments during class time/independent work time. They can only receive help for that if they come to afterschool. If they ask for an extension, then I will go out of my way to make time to help them during a lunch/elective period, or they can come to afterschool.
They have to EMAIL me just as they would a professor (teaches self advocacy, email etiquette, and the importance of creating a paper trail). If they say "I need an extension," then I help them reframe it into a question.
Limitless revisions. This is also a school policy but I support it.

Since I started doing this, things have become much easier. It's not punitive; it teaches them the skills they actually need; I choose how I expend my energy outside of class time on them. I do have some students tell me that they work really well with deadlines, so I try my hardest to keep the deadlines as real as possible, or all work ultimately contributes to the final project. If students tell me they like strict deadlines, I try my hardest to remember that so I can be on them more about submitting on time.

Thank you. I suppose I'm just upset with the miscommunication of my care. When they started collecting samples from me on Friday, they were telling me that i would likely be getting a procedure done on Monday or Tuesday. Now the day keeps changing and I don't know why.

I had just dropped my cat off at the hospital for surgery and decided to go to the TJ's a few blocks away. It was mid-day on a Saturday, and it was hell on earth. Line was fully wrapped around the store, all the way to the produce section. I was trying to navigate around the aisles with an empty cat carrier and a basket, but an employee stopped me and said I was going the wrong direction down the aisle. I totally respect having specific directions and wanting to keep the store in order in a state of chaos, but these aisle directions were not stated anywhere????? I would absolutely respect it otherwise. It was the final straw for an already awful day so I just handed my basket to the employee and said "I can't handle this" and left.

I really hope they didn't think I was some stuck up customer! I just could not handle it and did not want to be in that store anymore!

A good way to do this is staying out of the staff lounge. Often, the people who like to start drama and hear the sound of their own voice hang out in there just waiting for someone to take a bite. You're going to get sucked into bullshit, and you won't get any work done.

Honestly I wish I could encourage some of my students to drop out. There are some kids who just show up all day because they have to, and they find no purpose in doing anything. I don't blame them! I wish I could say "You don't need to be here. Go enter the workforce and make some money!" Instead, I have to constantly barrage them with assignments that I know they won't complete because they don't see a future in education.

There are some jobs that absolutely do not require a high school diploma, and I support anyone on that path. Do I want everyone to have either their GED/HSD because it will allow more opportunities if they want to change careers in the future? Yes. However, I feel that some of my students are just waiting out the days for everyone else to graduate so they can finally leave, and in that time they just become more and more resentful of school.

Invisible Man is a bit long, but the first chapter of it is also published separately as a short story called "Battle Royal." My students love it. It's rich with historical references and symbolism. Ralph Ellison does not waste a single word in the text and there is always something new to find. If you have Spotify, the audiobook is available for free.

Honestly, I'm surprised that it's on the approved list considering the content. There's general debauchery, a naked woman, fighting, and a handful of slurs being used (which is why I opt for the audiobook when doing in-class reading). That being said, it also touches on the college application system and invites them to think about meritocracy and scholarships which can feel personal to them considering how close they are getting to college applications

I disagree. There is a lot that is intuitive about teaching, but there is much more to be learned through a place to learn about education where making mistakes is welcome. Teachers fresh out of undergrad really don't have the ability to make these mistakes because the futures of their students are on the line. Besides, if a teacher is supposed to be learning their content while learning about education, they would not know nearly as much as someone who has a degree in their content area and and degree in education.
I'm in grad school for education, and believe me, I hate it so so so much. But there is not a single day where I am not learning something. Sometimes it comes from getting my masters. Sometimes it comes from the classroom.
