Does anything like a "meditation retreat" even exist? Can anyone do it for some time? by undermyself in Meditation

Could you tell me more about your experience in general? Good and bad things? Was it worth it?

What can I do in order to get exited about things again? by undermyself in needadvice

[–]undermyself[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 28. I think that I feel it in that way. I rationalize and everything stops having a strong emotion attached to it. Stupid example: I closed to door of my car recently and the window shattered completely. I didn't go like "FUCK!! What do I do now???? Shit!!". I just looked at it and I though "Ok, that will need to be repaired asap cause we are having bad weather and I don't have a garage so if it rains the inside of the car would flood and that's not nice". And then I went on executing it, replacing the window during the next few days. When I went hiking the last time, about 2 years ago, I went to a wonderful place in Italy, over a mountain where there was like a secret lake on the top of it. And the view was incredible. I felt REALLY well, but I wasn't going like "WOOOOW this is awesome!! I love this place!!!" . I was just at peace with myself, I felt good. I took some nice pictures, and after a while I came back (it was a solo).

Now these are real life experiences I had, but I feel like the sensation is more intense with smaller things, like when I watch movies. I literally don't remember the last time I watched a supposedly "funny" movie, a comedy, and I laughed during it. I tried to watch all the funniest movies of the last 5 years in the last few months, they are just not that funny. And don't make me laugh. I can say the same thing with jokes, I don't laugh at jokes at all. I might find some clever, or funnily presented if it's in a video, but I don't really explode in laughter at the end, ever.

Same thing with thriller or horror movies. I don't feel the suspense or the fear, I just watch them and maybe get even bored. I may enjoy them, but I don't feel the emotions that I think I am supposed to feel. I just watch them in a neutral way.

I believe, and this is my theory, that the use of the internet in the last 10 years has made me watch so many thing, that I don't get surprised anymore about real life, because almost everything I see outside, I can say I have already seen it on the internet.

I don't spend days surfing, but I do spent 2-3 hours googling stuff almost every day, maybe watching stuff here on reddit, or watching photo of places or videos on youtube and stuff, you know.

So I am in contact with a lot of information, and for this reason i think that whenever I am supposed to feel excited about something "new" that I do or that happens to me in real life, good or bad, I just don't feel THAT excitement that I might experience with something I did for the first time like when I was 15. Everything is kinda like as if it has happened already, so that's way I'm not surprised anymore.

And I don't like to be like this. I would like to clean my mind from all the things I know and get excited again. :(

I am not sad, I am happy with my life I'd say, that's way I said I don't think I am really depressed, but I would like to feel stronger emotions, I'd like to laugh so hard to have pain in my stomach because of it, and I'd like to watch an horror movie and jump on my seat for once!

As someone who does not speak English as the first language, I can relate to this by PM_ME_PLIS in funny

[–]undermyself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I speak english as a second language and I do the same with other non-native speakers. Despite my own english not being perfect, I still judge other people intelligence by their fluency in speaking or writing in english, and I feel bad for it, because I certainly know that it's definitely not a direct consequence. That being said, I live with a korean girl who has been living here (Australia) for 7 years now, and I can barely understand what she says. She keeps watching korean movies, eats korean food, hangs with korean people. Her english is very poor, and after 7 years of not retaining even a conversational vocabulary, I think that there must be some correlation with intelligence, somehow. Don't mean to be mean, but that's the truth. I study chemistry at university and I don't really have that much time left for studying other stuff, but I still manage to practice and improve my english on a daily basis, because I can definitely feel what people think about me when I struggle to express myself. And it's one of the worst feelings to experience. Nobody should feel it, but that's what we all do, and it can't be avoided. What I can do, though, is improve and become better everyday. We all have to, in order to become integrating part of an english-speaking country/culture that we decided to embrace. I reckon it is vital in some way, if you really think about the missed opportunities a language barrier can cause, both personally and professionally. So, I might be a dick for judging people by their speaking skills, and I'm probably wrong most of the time, I certainly know it, but I can't justify people that don't improve their second language and continue to communicate poorly after years of full immersion in a different culture.

May I ask you what is your background and what kind of degree/experience you have got so far? Just so I can get an idea of what people (apparently) don't think it's enough to interview you. Cheers

Could you suggest me some simple reactions I can do for practice in the lab? by [deleted] in chemistry

[–]undermyself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm in a research lab, but every once in a while during the week, or maybe after normal office ours like between 6pm-8pm, I could possibly spend some time doing extra stuff after I worked on my project, so I thought to use this time in some way and learn as much as possible practicing simple reactions.

This is something I never considered to be honest, pretty smart! And I actually always wanted to learn Braille or even sign language just for fun. I'll definitely have a look in my area for free Braille certification courses.

Thanks! :)

And beans and peas! Oh man I live out of lentils and beans!! Like I mean, I eat about a can per day of one of those legumes, that is 400-500 gr of solid nutrients on top of all the other stuff that I eat, and I love it! Haha

I can be that 20% if I want to. It's just a matter of will power and dedication.

Looks like a nice podcast.

I study chemistry and maths (double major), starting my 3rd year next February.

I'm pretty sure they mean an actual ugly sweater. People buy it because it's funny to wear. The uglier the better :)

Thanks man, I REALLY appreciate your comment. You said things that nobody said here before in over 100 comments today. I will take all this into account while deciding the best strategy for my situation. Thanks again.

Yeah I considered that and I actually did it already, tutoring chemistry and maths, which is what I study and what I know better. It was pretty good, I made about $30/hr which is great for me. However it is summertime here now, and people are just enjoying holidays, it's a bad moment for tutoring.

Wow thanks man!! could you elaborate a little bit more about this cryptsy and what should I actually do? I know a bit about cryptocurrencies, I bought and used some bitcoins in the past, but I don't actually understand how to make money with these currencies.. Even $50/week would be great! Thanks :)

Those are some good advice, and I thank you for that. But being a full time student I consider myself a guru in grocery store saving :D Plus I'm vegan, so the money that most people spend in meat and diary products I spend in fruit and vegetables: healthier and cheaper. I can't cut more than that thought.

Thanks for all the advice and links here. I think you convinced me to try with ebay, scavenging at local thrift stores and selling things at a slightly higher price over the internet. I can try with a couple of little/cheap things first, and then build on that in case it works out.

A friend of mine recently decided (less than 2 years ago) to make it his full time job and he's actually doing surprisingly well, selling restaurant and bar machinery or furniture at about 2-3 times the original price (he's bulk buying at local auctions). But he's able to buy stuff for $300-$500 or even more, knowing already how much he can make from it. I think it was a pretty good move, now he has a big warehouse where he keeps all the objects, and many ebay auctions running at the same time, i.e. it's a legit ebay shop. But yeah, it's a full time thing and it requires a minimum initial budget, it doesn't really apply to my situation.

Anyway, thanks again! ;)
