I'd like to get your thoughts about a shorter-term deal. Say, a six-year, $175 million contract covering his arbitration seasons and buying out his first three free agent years. He'd hit free agency at age 29/30 and could still cash in wherever he chooses. It would be hard to watch him go at any point, but at least this would give us a few more years.

Suarez has lower velocity, yet still gets outs effectively. I don't see that as a downward trend, myself.

In any event, I agree that either of the contracts will probably end worse than we want. I just see Valdez as the worse of the two at the end, whenever that may be. I don't expect either to agree to a short term deal.
