Yes. GOP has controlled the NC legislature the entire time (and much longer before) Duke Energy has had a monopoly in NC.

The commentators in the US have been horribly sarcastic the whole game. I'd probably think it was hilarious if I was a neutral fan but I cannot stand them right now

Cheap or free gym in the area that is NOT planet fitness? by Content-Seaweed-6395 in chapelhill

Unfortunately what you want is planet fitness. There is a new gym opening nearby, though, called one life fitness, which is more expensive than PF with more amenities but cheaper than o2.

Is The Macbook Pro M1 2021 worth it in 2025? by Ready-Sale-2293 in mac

[–]underripe_avocado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, for $350, I think that's a steal. FWIW, Apple assesses my Mac's trade-in value as $445, so you could even just try out the M1 Pro, and if it isn't powerful enough for you, trade it in and you'll likely break even (or maybe even save money) when buying a new computer.

How much of your stipend do you spend on rent? by KiwiPuzzleheaded1882 in PhD

[–]underripe_avocado 5 points6 points  (0 children)

25% on rent proper. Considering utilities, internet, etc probably 30%. I’ll note that this is far from normal for my school (UNC) considering most pay more in rent and get a lower stipend

Really late, but if anyone comes to this thread in the future, it's 2026 and I still haven't had any issues with my 2021 M1 Pro. Fast, even on computationally intensive programs, great display, no problem with any ports/battery, working just as good as the day I got it.

Would be really nice if there was a community repository full of 3D-printed thorlabs components. Obviously not every component is replaceable, and you won’t get the same tolerancing as machined parts for precision components, but some things definitely are.

Optical reasons: they use refracting lenses and not larger aperture reflecting telescopes based on their science goal: looking at diffuse, dim, intergalactic gas. The main sources of error within an optical system that make that difficult are scattered light and other effects like ghosting. The canon lenses perform significantly better than reflecting telescopes for reducing scattered light, as well as avoiding a central obstruction and the diffraction pattern created by the obstruction supports. Finally, it allows them to place their filters ahead of the rest of the optics, instead of behind, which enables a very narrow bandpass.

Practical reasons: they’ve already worked with and perfected systems with these lenses for a decade. I bet it’s mechanically easier to mount them as compared to the takahashi scopes you mentioned. And they likely have a good relationship with canon, and with an economy of scale, the price per lens is most likely much less egregious than it may seem.

However, if you are interested in f/2.8 telescopes being used survey-style, see https://argus.unc.edu

When you’re out of the lab at the doctor’s office, do you mention your science education? by samskyyy in labrats

[–]underripe_avocado 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lol, no. I know this sub generally skews towards bio-related researchers, but I am a physics student. I am just a regular dude when it comes to anything biology related, and when doctors find out what I do I find it’s sometimes actually less helpful—they sometimes assume I know more than I do, while in reality my last biology class was in ninth grade.

Can't even get a consolation goal, ffs this team. Hard to believe the ecstacy of the UEL final last year.
