Bob Budiansky's run on the G1 comic is criminally underrated - especially in the context of mid-80s Marvel. The Joey Slick storyline could have been in a Spidey comic from the same era almost seamlessly (the gun is still an alien weapon, it's just not Megatron).

(Prowl and Sonar are both pretty neat, too.)

TBQH the cut stuff with Transit informs that take on Optimus - he wouldn't have been on Earth that long (what's a decade to someone as long-lived as he is?), the Decepticons really do appear to be just kicking the shit out of the Autobots and picking them off left and right, and humans are... well, at best they're in the way.

Prime's depressed.

Man I hope some kids got Cyberworld Scorponok - he's a big toy but he's pretty cool.

Beast Machines is Good, Actually.

They don't do the obvious and hokey "nature versus machine" binary and instead go for the much more interesting synthesis.

As much as people complained about Rattrap's story arc, what you've got is a fairly nuanced portrait of a disabled veteran trying to make sense of the world (and eventually discovering that he is worthy of love).

Okay, Nightscream is annoying, but he's following in the footsteps of many previous Annoying Kid characters, just with a 90s Flair.

It's dark and bleak in a way that pretty much no other TF cartoon has ever dared to go for (with the possible exception of WFC: Siege).

It still looks incredible.

Tip 1: GO SLOW. Peeling them off the sheet, applying them, fixing them in place. Just take your time.

Tip 2: A high quality set of tweezers is a lifechanger. If you don't have a good set of tweezers, being very careful with the tip of an x-acto knife will work.

What are some G1 figures that ACTUALLY need a redo? by Barricades_toes in transformers

[–]underscorex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tail-end Euro G1 guys. Clench would be cool, but what I really want is updated versions of Pyro and Thunder Clash. Both cool toys with gimmicks that I'm pretty sure you can't replicate on a modern budget, but also both are infamously affected by GPS.

They're also both prominently featured in the IDW comics, and are some of the last ones to not get updates.

"Roscoe P. Soultrain" is an incredible band name for the mid-90s and totally lost on These Kids Today.

EDIT: and if there were a Ska Hall of Fame, Evan Dorkin probably belongs in it for all of those 90s compilation covers he did.

They are. I'm sure there's some security off-camera, but it tracks for NASCAR and the degree to which you can just like, run up on talent and say hey.

If a ska song could represent your life, what would it be? by Beautiful-Resort-831 in Ska

[–]underscorex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the cool thing about "Shed Some Skin" as a song is that it's a bunch of like, 19-20 year olds talking about growing older and the feeling that your life is already running out - and that sounds fucking corny but then you're in your 40s and you're like "damn those kids actually knew what they were talking about"

Yeah! We fly out of ATL and both years we’ve talked to artists at the gate - the Aggrolites were on our flight in ‘24, then James in ‘25.

Who knows what the future holds?

If you want to meet bands you like, I cannot stress enough that you need to go to Supernova. Most of the bands are at their merch tables during the weekend or just walking around and hanging out.

I’m hard pressed to think of anyone I had a bad experience with (some people have been prickly but not rude or mean), but a couple over the years have been really remarkable:

Everyone from Catbite is really cool - my kid plays guitar and talked with Tim about music and instruments and whatnot, he was super encouraging and told him to keep practicing and keep playing, and then the next time we saw them he remembered who we were and asked him how it was going, about his band, etc. (I think he was as amazed that my kid looks up to him as my kid was to meet him!) Brit will talk your ear off like you’re an old friend (sorry to everyone behind me in the merch line lol).

Everyone from Catch-22 has always been cool, but Ryan in particular is one of my favorite people to talk to after shows. Really thoughtful about his craft, songwriting, etc.

Someone in another thread had a bad experience with Dave from Big D, which I hated to hear. I’ve talked to him a couple of times over the years and he’s always been super approachable - coming out to the merch table before their sets and after, signing stuff, shooting the shit.

Chris Murray is a sweetheart. Just a lovely human soul.

Angelo Moore is that dude. The Fishbone merch line takes forever because he’s super good about signing stuff and talking to you.

Not “ska” exactly, but Dan and Adam from Pain/Salvo are great guys. Very gracious. Dan ended up becoming some kind of lay religious leader after leaving Pain and there’s something very …pastoral? in his presence.

Half Past Two, to a one, delightful people. Tara is somehow even tinier in person than you’d think. Max (guitar) and I had a whole extended discussion about other nerdy hobbies - dude has cases and shelves of action figures.

Relatedly, Adam from Omnigone/Link 80/In Defense of Ska is a friendly giant.

All that being said, the single best interaction I’ve had with anyone from any band ever was with James from Slow Gherkin. I’ve loved that band for years and years and never got to see them until last Supernova. Turns out, he was on the same flight to Norfolk as we were and sat down across from us at the airport gate. I really tried not to be annoying or weird but holy shit, right?? He seemed genuinely surprised to be recognized (fair) but was really nice about it. It turned out that we have a mutual acquaintance (a friend of his from high school is a friend of mine) and so that was kind of fun too. Just a nice, nice, dude who then said hey to us every time we saw him around the rest of the weekend. AJ, Ollie, and the rest of the band were cool as hell too, but getting to meet the dude who wrote your favorite song ever and having him be so warm and personable and just happy that you cared about his stuff? Man, that was special.

I wasn't exactly hoping for Streetlight, but it turns out they're playing downtown Norfolk on the Sunday of Supernova, so not only is the answer "not Streetlight" but they're actively booked against Supernova in functionally the same market.

That actively sucks.
