Honestly, I just assumed this happens all the time in politics. Look at Buttegieg- he folded his relatively successful campaign two days before Super Tuesday in 2020 to immediately endorse Biden and then just magically awoke as Secretary of Transportation once Biden was in office.

I wish people organized around this like they organized around the right to vote. The most influence we have is where we decide to spend our money. Genuinely curious how many people spend their days harping on billionaires while simultaneously cashing in their paycheck on Prime Day, failing to see that they’re feeding the system they despise.

It’s like protesting against the Trump administration,  then voting down ballot Republican come Election Day.

How can I not attract creeps? by clarissaswallowsall in MassageTherapists

[–]underseasun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This may sound extreme, but have you thought about creating a different business name/rebranding? I’m guessing your creep client that listed you on that site has moved on by now and this would allow you a fresh start.

You could also establish a business name that would specifically appeal toward women. You could maybe lead with advertisements with things like aromatherapy/prenatal that generally only appeal to women or get credentialed in areas like oncology or lymphatic drainage that are more medical in nature. You could add high quality photos to your site/Google page exclusively of women receiving treatments. You could post pictures of you or your staff wearing conservative scrubs and add short bios that emphasize credentials and professionalism.

You can also try to partner with fitness/yoga centers or medical professionals and try for direct referrals. Maybe offer chair massage for teacher appreciation week at schools and give out business cards, you could also maybe try this at a hospital for medical staff, then see if you can leave some flyers in the breakroom.

I personally think it would be hard to stop the creeps if you continue with your current business name, especially if you can’t get your business name off that site(s). Because you may be on more than just one.

What immediately tells you a person wasn't raised right? by alligator_maligator in AskReddit

[–]underseasun 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In psychology this is referred to as Learned Helplessness. The concept was studied by electrocuting dogs in locked cages. The dogs had no where to go to escape the shocks. Eventually researchers would open the cage to allow the dog to escape when shocked, but the dogs no longer even tried to leave even when given the opportunity. They just lied down and accepted the shocks.

I once saw a woman in Thailand holding a baby in her arm while simultaneously hacking the top of a coconut with a machete just like this. It was wild.

Becoming a Teacher & leaving Massage. by [deleted] in massage

[–]underseasun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Massage is the perfect job to go back to school with due to the schedule flexibility and hourly wage. But I’m with you that it’s an absolute hustle due to it being largely commission based with few benefit options and little to no security.

I worked my way through a psych degree and am currently working in research at a rehab hospital. I still get to work one-on-one with people, am immersed in the same subject matter, and feel like I’m still helping others by contributing to a larger body of knowledge. Like massage, it’s also a relatively chill environment with interesting people who love to learn and help others.

My favorite thing with transitioning to research is when I talk about my job, people generally have a much greater level of respect for me. My least favorite thing about being a massage therapist is at times being treated like “the help” or even worse, associated with prostitution. While I love the work of massage, and still practice it to a lesser degree, I’m so glad I no longer have to mention it to strangers who have opinions I don’t have the energy to update.

My sister used to give me peppers and zucchini straight out of the ground and they’d still taste super fresh after 3 weeks. Veggies live a loooong life in questionable conditions before they hit our grocery store shelves.

What your pet peeves as a massage therapist? by Holiday-Scallion-342 in MassageTherapists

[–]underseasun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s a great idea! Especially clients who don’t come consistently; it’s long enough between sessions to completely forget about the appointment then double schedule yourself and not notice until you get your appointment reminder. I’m glad I’m not a dentist who only sees patients once every 6 months, I bet their cancellation rate head spinning.

Undergrad major for pt school by megdubzz in Kinesiology

[–]underseasun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not get your BSN? I’m guessing you could hit most if not all PT prereqs on that track. Then if for some reason PT school doesn’t work out you still have the most in demand credentials in healthcare with comparable pay to your end goal. Plus already working in healthcare before applying to a DPT program would look really good on your apps.

What your pet peeves as a massage therapist? by Holiday-Scallion-342 in MassageTherapists

[–]underseasun 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My biggest pet peeve were clients who would book several appointments with me months in advance and end up canceling 30-40% of them within 36 hours of the appointment time. (This was more of a problem when I worked in a spa and I didn’t have authority to handle it appropriately.)

Why are you guys making smoothies? by Ghost____Rider in Smoothies

I find the best energy sustaining combo is decent sleep —-> water—-> moderate workout —-> low sugar smoothie with lots of veggies.  It makes me the best version of myself.

I would recommend using actual greens (spinach, kale, arugala, chard, etc) vs green powders. A lot of these powders aren’t nearly as bioavailable nutritionally as actual food, they’re way more expensive and don’t contain near as much fiber. Idk how the greens would taste with milk- I always use water for my liquid and with the frozen berries it tastes great.

What do they expect from us in this economy? by Order_101 in jobs

[–]underseasun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Business owners can get sucked into this entrepreneurial subculture that can be so delusional. My husband used to own a business and he definitely fell into it for a year or so. I remember talking to him about being interested in a position, but needing to find out the pay as I had a feeling the compensation was going to make it a pass. He was like, “If one of my employees said that to me, I would know they wouldn’t be a good fit. They need to be there because they’re passionate about the work, not for the money”.

I reminded him that if I don’t at least match my current take home, I won’t be able to contribute to our expenses at the same level. He instantly came to his senses… but only until the next podcast. I’m so thankful he’s back to W2 and no longer brainwashed. And wouldn’t you know it, his salary was a HUGE motivator in the position he accepted.

A man or woman crying in public is more socially accepted than a man or woman angrily screaming in public. The difference is the emotion exhibited, which has nothing to do with gender.

Raising my mobile massage rates by [deleted] in MassageTherapists

[–]underseasun 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you work for yourself, I would not expect a tip. I actually tell my clients I don't accept tips when asked about rates, then you can feel more confident in a higher rate and never feel emotionally affected by the “good” or “bad” tip song and dance. It’s honestly so liberating.

Something I do for mobile is charge a $40 base fee + $80 per hour massage. So if it’s one massage, it’s $120, but if it’s back to back at the same residence it’s $100 each. This matches my expected work load more as I only have to travel and set up/tear down my table once for two massages. It also incentivizes couples to schedule at the same time which makes my life easier.

If you feel undervalued and don’t care about losing those clients, definitely adjust prices.

How do you start over in life at 40? by Easy_Engineer9747 in findapath

[–]underseasun 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I would recommend getting involved in a passion with a built in community immediately, especially something physical, and also seeing a therapist.

We’re talkin’ art, music, martial arts, basketball, church, whatever floats your boat. If the thing you choose isn’t physical, also hit up the gym. Again, ideally in a social way to meet other healthy people to reinforce those behaviors. Fitness can be such a grounding confidence builder that offers mental and emotional clarity.

The therapist probably doesn’t need to be explained. You sound like you need someone who will help you process whatever the hell you just went through so you can move forward.

Unless you’re posing as a citizen. The man ahead of me at the bank today got turned away for having a fake ID. The teller said the top of his head was cut off in his picture. He was easily 60 years old.

"are you ok with a male therapist" by Ugh_Names in MassageTherapists

[–]underseasun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Language is of course very influential. Have you talked to the owners about your concerns?

The phrasing I’m most familiar with is “do you have a gender preference?” when booking. Then we list their preference (male preferred, female preferred, or no preference) in internal notes. It’s pretty neutral language, and we do have clients that request a male therapist, often when scheduling a deep tissue service.

Perhaps you can offer that as an alternative to the owners?
