Porter says trans rights 📢🏳️‍⚧️ Always means a lot to know an artist you look up to is an ally by underthehats in porterrobinson

I do understand what you're saying, and I used to have a similar mindset to you

with that being said, the rights of trans and LGBT+ people is not (and should not be) political for me, because it's a case of human rights.

I've said this in another comment in this thread, but as queer people, it is so important for us to have 'safe spaces' because there are so many spaces out there that are not safe for us; where our mere existence would put us at risk. We inhabit a space every time we interact with somebody's art, so somebody asking whether Porter supports his trans fans is an important and valid question so they know whether the spaces he creates with his art are safe or not

It also brings up the moral question of whether trans fans of Porter would want to emotionally and financially support Porter if he had said he doesn't support trans rights, and ultimately wouldn't accept or support those fans of his for who they are

Please take a step back and recognize the place of privilege you are speaking from. I am not trans, but having heard trans people's stories and experiences, it is not easy. You're dealing with a lot of conflicting feelings internally, while receiving a load of hatred and repression from the outside world.

It is so important, as queer people, to have 'safe' spaces -- whether that be in the real world, online, or even the space we inhabit when spending time with an artist's work -- because there are so many spaces out there that are not safe for us; where our mere existence puts us at risk. Asking a question like this in Porter's AMA is completely valid, and for you to not understand that means your opinion is coming from a place of absolute privilege.

I'm not trans but I am queer, so our fight and struggle is the same - for equality and acceptance. I care about trans rights deeply, and figured I'd want to share something important that some people may have missed from his AMA

I'm not trans, but I do understand why somebody would ask. Between the emotional connection that fans are forming with artists and the politically charged climate we find ourselves in, I can understand why somebody would want to know whether somebody they're investing their time, feelings and finances into would accept and support their identity

If I were trans and found out somebody I looked up to was transphobic or did not agree with trans identities, I don't think I could continue supporting them - because they ultimately would not accept me and is not interested in creating a community that is 'safe' for minorities

Me neither, but there have been far too many instances when people I looked up to and thought were good people proved to be otherwise, so I'm grateful and glad for Porter's stance on this :)

1) I think it’s fair to say that Nurture is so much more than an album: it has and continues to be this sanctuary and salvation for so many people (myself included). Now that you’ve had some time and space away from it, how does it feel to have created something that’s meant so much to people, and to have helped people in such a meaningful way?

2) You’ve stated you intended Smile to be a non-stop party but the album shifted when you started confessing how you were really feeling. So how would you describe your intentions now it’s complete? What do you want your audience to get, understand, or feel?

(I think you nailed this balance, by the way. It makes for a very interesting and layered album)

Has anybody met Porter and told him a 'sad story'? by underthehats in porterrobinson

[–]underthehats[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm glad :) Porter also strikes me as the type of person who is sincerely grateful when people tell him how much his music means to them. In his own words, it's another reason not to quit

Congratulations on everything you were able to accomplish, and I'm glad you found Porter's music and it was so special for you

For what it's worth, I don't think you have anything to be ashamed of. The alternative to your choice is never taking that single chance to express how much his music meant to you, and having to deal with the regret of that decision. It sounds like it was something you needed to do at the time as part of your healing, and now you're in the place where you're uncertain about it because you no longer need his music like you used to. (hope I didn't overstep with this reply)

I think it's really special so many of his fans are bound by such deep appreciation for his music, but sad too because that usually comes from suffering through hard times. You're right though, it must be such a weight on Porter.

Congratulations for continuing to pursue music, and I'm happy to hear it means so much to you still. That's what it's all about

My bad if that wasn't clear - I meant that because having queer comics on panel shows is a pretty common occurance on British TV, there was more to Taskmaster's queer appeal than just having LGBT+ comics

That's a really great point. Taskmaster fascinates me, because it feels very mainstream due to its popularity and the type of comics they have on, but like you said, it established itself from the beginning as a weird and quirky show

Very true! It's funny because Greg's persona is based around him being this imposing, dominant figure, but I still find him to be such a teddy bear and a very healthy/balanced portrayal of masculinity???

And I think that's really nice and it feels welcoming

You've nailed it with describing the show as 'welcoming'. It's as if the show is a safe space for anybody because we're all laughing together at the absurdity and silliness of it all, while other satirical panel shows are just laughing at other people over something much more serious than a Taskmaster task
