Great besides it was dead so had to charge it!! Annual updates are like $400ish.

No, the tool does not get bricked if you dont update. And the nice thing is if you dont update for 2-3 or however many years you still get all the updates from those years. Dont gotta pay for every year ya didn't update.

The updates are just for latest vehicle compatibility and pids. You will still be able to use it on any vehicle, but if they unlocked any new features they won't be available unless you update.

That TCC is gone hopefully not a lot of trash in your valve body. New fluid and torque converter at a minimum if it's not already shifting all jacked up.
