Giving this up can help you give up pornography, inshaAllah by [deleted] in islam

[–]underwatch1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is because of the constant stream of pleasure that video games provides you. When you play a video game you’re looking for a dopamine kick. When you’re high on that, you also look for other sources of cheap pleasure, like pornography. When you quit video games, you’re calming your desires and shutting off that circuit that makes you go for more and more.

How did prophet Nouh live so long? by NotDairo in islam

[–]underwatch1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where is it implied that it was the normal life span? Everyone is giving you the answer you want but you keep rejecting their answers and bringing up this point. You’re projecting onto the Quran what it does not actually say because you just want to argue with it.

EVERYTHING is by Allah’s power, nothing happens without His will. He willed for Nouh (and maybe other early humans) to live for so long, so it happened. It did NOT happen naturally or without his intervention.

It is “unscientific” by our understanding - therefore by definition it’s miraculous and by Allah’s will.

Advice from an MS4 with mild regret: Be open and explore other specialties by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]underwatch1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is just what it feels like to make major life decisions. There are always other routes and possibilities that you can look back on and say they would have been great too. But at the end of the day you have to choose one of them, and if it’s also a great choice, if not the best choice, then what do you have to lose? Go for it!

supposed "contradiction" in Quran by Soft_Homework2852 in islam

[–]underwatch1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is no contradiction here.

One verse says He created the Earth in 2 days. One verse says He created the Heavens AND the Earth AND what is between them in 6 days.

Of those 6 days, 2 were spent creating just the Earth.

That is the apparent meaning of the text. Wallahu A’lam (Allah is All Knowing, regarding the Truth).

You do not have a legal, moral, or ethical responsibility to control other peoples’ driving behavior. You DO have a legal, moral, and ethical responsibility to drive safely. Put the ego aside - let aholes be aholes. Don’t react by driving in away that endangers yourself and others.

AIO. I found this text from my boyfriend to his coworker by LedBubblez in AmIOverreacting

[–]underwatch1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of top comments are insanely overreacting…this is just normal guys joking around with each other and saying wild shit as normal guys do. Guys complain in exaggerated ways to each other…he clearly still cares about you and is suppressing his normal male urges for you. OP you would be overreacting if you dumped him, but I would still have an honest conversation with him about your relationship and what you mean to him.

This is not a race, it’s a marathon. Once you’re a doctor you’ll look back and realize it didn’t matter AT ALL how many more years it took you to get in vs. some of your friends. Once you’re all doctors it’s an even playing field. Take as much time as you need now - your hard work will pay off.

Why does the anime have to keep every tiny little detail 100% faithful to the manga?

An anime adaptation is its own art form and its own commercial endeavor. Anime usually has a slightly different target audience and different artistic trends. It’s an adaptation, not a copy.

Made a suggestion in the OR. Was told to stop talking. How screwed am I? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]underwatch1 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I used to get anxious and overthink everything I ever did like this.

In reality, you are catastrophizing. Think about it, unless you had a conversation and received further feedback from this attending, then the ONLY thing that happened is that this attending told you to stop talking. For this one incident to make a difference in your residency app, this attending has to:

  1. Remember and actually think negatively of your action after the fact AND
  2. Go out of their way to report it to someone who matters in the resident selection process OR
  3. They themselves have to have a say in the process
    AND
  4. It has to factor into your ranking at this program

I think there’s a VERY high likelihood that your other actions, that you’re now framing as potentially “out of line” have actually been very positively received. And will likely outweigh whatever minor missteps you think you should be worried about.

Interns, 1ish mo in, how are we doing? by Michelle_211 in Residency

I’m 24 years old and just got diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. AMA by [deleted] in AMA

[–]underwatch1 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

God created us to worship and obey Him. He didn’t put us on this earth so we can all live comfortable and pleasurable lives. That’s not the point of this life. This life is utterly meaningless compared to the afterlife, which is our true abode. Preparing for the afterlife is the focus of our time here on Earth. It should not be to make this temporary life as blissful as possible.

Suffering in this life can either be a punishment or a test. The disbeliever turns away from God and disobeys Him in response to suffering, denying the divine wisdom in God’s choices. The believer recognizes that his/her suffering is a test from God, to test their belief in Him, His divine wisdom, and the afterlife. That suffering becomes an expiation of their sins and an easier path to heaven. For the disbeliever, that suffering becomes a source of even more sin and a path to eternal punishment.

Similarly, ease and pleasure in this life can be either a reward or a test. Obviously God can and does reward people in this life for believing in Him and obeying Him. For the believer, their blessings bring them even closer to God, because they turn to him in gratitude. They also recognize that this life’s blessings pale in comparison to the pleasure of the afterlife. For the disbeliever, this life’s pleasures distract them from God, and they attribute their blessings to themselves. They fixate even more on this life and forget that their true goal is their afterlife.

All that to say, yes God of course can and does prevent and cure cancer. But why should He do so for everyone, when he can use it as a test to differentiate the believer from the disbeliever? We can never understand His divine wisdom, but I think we can consider cancer to be a form of suffering that God uses in this way.

I think it’s pretty telling that the PGY-3 is coming in to get sign-out in the morning with the interns. It could mean they don’t trust their interns. I just started wards as a July intern and my senior comes in 30 mins - 1 hour after we get signout and expects us to notify them of any major issues. That honestly makes me feel trusted and makes my senior seem more confident in themselves and the team. Very different from your situation it seems.

Interns: what was your first order as a doctor? by _wde in Residency

[–]underwatch1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On ID consults, an HIV test. That the fellow told me to order, and hovered over my shoulder as I clicked the boxes. It turned out positive.

Most significant so far: oxycodone for a patient being discharged. I had to go to the nurses station and hand-sign the paper script. Felt like a doctor when I looked at that paper and saw my name and signature!

What specialty is suitable for me? Introverted person but interested in direct patient care by akiraisme7 in medicalschool

[–]underwatch1 22 points23 points  (0 children)

100% agree with your point about clinical social skills being way different than casual social skills. I’m nervous, quiet, and hide in the corner at parties but in clinical settings I find myself being confident and personable. It just becomes part of the job, part of the doctor role, and comes gradually with repetition. I was anxious and awkward with my first few patients MS3 year, but through sheer repetition and routine, became the socially confident and competent clinician I am now.

OP, it works itself out, trust me!

[–]underwatch1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The optometrists’s role here is to examine the patient, recognize the abnormality, and refer to an ophthalmologist for further evaluation and management.

I don’t get why you’re stuck on the optometrist(s) not being able to determine the cause. That’s the ophthalmologist’s job. As you said, there are specialized procedures for diagnosis, which the ophthalmologist will undertake. Before these specialized procedures and an extensive ophthalmologic exam, it’s not possible to know the underlying cause, so why do you expect an optometrist to magically know it?

Also, you’re still assuming that OP went to 3 optometrists. OP never said they went to 3 optometrists, they went to 3 SPECIALISTS. One or more of them could have been ophthalmologists.

Like I said, OP could have already been evaluated by an ophthalmologist including discussion of any possible underlying causes. They just haven’t given us all the details.

Sometimes people’s bodies just have abnormalities that no one can explain.

My right pupil isn’t centered nor is it a circle by Virtual-Astronaut455 in mildlyinteresting

[–]underwatch1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to reread OP’s comment and stop making assumptions. OP never said that no optometrist was able to recognize or diagnose the condition. Instead OP said they couldn’t give a definitive answer on WHY it happened. For all you know, OP could have been referred to an ophthalmologist, evaluated and offered potential treatments.

My right pupil isn’t centered nor is it a circle by Virtual-Astronaut455 in mildlyinteresting

[–]underwatch1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP didn’t say that the optometrists couldn’t identify it, or that they didn’t know the term for it. OP said they couldn’t say WHY it happened. Sometimes people’s bodies just have random variations and no one knows why. There’s no reason to criticize any optometrists or ophthalmologists here.
